Oh, that's not nearly as dramatic as you make it out to be. Granted, it's still a stupid law.

The creation of the law was justified by stats compiled by the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC), which found that more than half of children and teenagers that accessed pornography “stumbled upon” it. The proposed regulations, if fully and successfully implemented (it’s unclear how the BBFC can censor the entire internet single-handedly) could prevent the ‘stumbled upon’ factor, where young children that have no intention of accessing pornography inadvertently do.

So you put up a splash screen that says it's adult content, "click here if you're an adult and want to enter." That's all that's fucking needed if the REAL concern were kids inadvertently "stumbling upon" porn sites with no intention of viewing them.
But of course, before even reading the article, anyone with a single functioning brain cell knew this law had nothing to do w/ protecting children from unintentional exposure to porn.

Really fucking creepy how prudes want to create giant databases of people and their particular sexual preferences, to monitor and use the release of said information publicly as a sword of Damocles over the necks of any citizen that steps out of line.
It's Puritan-style spying on ones' neighbors on steroids.

At one point they were talking about needing folk to register at a post office in order to watch porn online. Not sure what happened with that law or if it's still going ahead. Not sure what a age barrier achieves anyway. The ones on ecig sites for example just require you to click "I'm over 18" and anyone could just click that. It's stupid when it comes to porn as 16 is the legal age for sex over here so to say you must be over 18 to view porn seems pointless.

Also, I recalled this wasn't the first time UK went off the fucking deep end in regards to porn, and a google search later yielded this stupid law from 3 years ago.

Warning: article names various sex acts that the UK banned from being portrayed in porn, if this would offend you...don't fucking read the article.

Asks children/teenagers if they were looking at porn on purpose or if they "stumbled" upon it. Everyone says they "stumbled" upon it because most people don't feel comfortable letting others know they're looking at porn all the time.

Asks parents of children/teenagers if their kids are watching porn on purpose or if they "stumbled" upon it. Parents of children/teenagers say they're kids are not watching porn all the time on purpose because most parents don't feel comfortable letting others know their kids watch porn on purpose (if they even know).

Almost everyone who looks at porn before the age of 18 did it by mistake. Everyone who does it on purpose are perverts and sexual deviants.

I can see how accurate this study would be.

So they're going to try and recreate 1984 rather than face the truth that "no, my kid actually did intentionally want to look at that porn"?

Wow.

Keep in mind that they used to arrest people over just normal pornography so anything they're doing now is a step down.

Eh, the first time I did it, it was a mistake. The subsequent times... not so much.

I don't know what you guys are worrying about.

The UK is more free than the US. I saw it in the freedom index. This is just another step on the path to true freedom.
