I work at a family owned restaurant in downtown DuBois, PA. Ive been there since I was 14 (10 years) and have wanted to become a manager for the last 4 or so. Two months ago I mentioned it to my boss, he said that Ive been there so long I definitely deserve it.

Well today he told us that current employees will no longer be considered for management because they havent had much luck with it. Only one person has ever been promoted to manager and she went back to being a server because her mom has stage 4 cancer and she cant work full time now so that%u2019s just bull

All this news is just a massive middle finger to the rest of us, especially myself and my wife who also wanted to be a manager.

I love this job and working at this restaurant but Im probably going to quit because I cant take this bullshit. Ive been told for 6 years that my boss wants to make me a cook and it hasnt happened and now this. Im sick of it and I really want to tell him how I feel but I know Ill be let go if I do and I dont have another job lined up. In fact this is the only job Ive ever worked and I dont even know how to get another job.

try to get a meeting with the owners. Tell them you have been there for 10 years, have been nothing but loyal and hardworking and that you are needing to start looking at career prospects beyond server or whatever you are doing now and that you were hoping to be able to prove yourself to be manager there and you were really disappointed to hear they wouldn't be considering internal promotions anymore. Ask to understand their reasoning for such a broad policy.

I wouldn't be surprised if your boss somehow torpedoed you. Or it may give you an opportunity to address their concerns.

Think about what you've actually got invested here. You work at a restaurant. I assume you're waiting tables? Is that really something to stick around for when you've been told flat out that you won't progress any further?

You have 10 years experience in the restaurant trade and you're only 24. If you really want to go into a management position then take that experience elsewhere, it's likely going to be more than your peers will have.

Nah, I'm with TC on this. He's asked for the chance to move up in responsibility after a decade of service and he's been flat out refused for a bullshit reason. They've made it clear they don't intend to give him any career progression at all. They won't even let him skill up (learn to be a cook).

Unless you actually think it's entitlement for someone to desire to not do exactly the same job they've been doing since they were 14 for the rest of their life?

Everything in the kitchen except cook. That is dishes, making salads, dressing, desserts, pizza, working the POS, and take out window. As well as taking orders over the phone, both carry out and catering jobs.

What you know is that you aren't going to rise any higher than a server position at this restaurant. Just gotta face facts on this one, it's a dead end job and you have all the opportunity to not die on your ass if you go somewhere else.

Oh Im leaving a notice. Im going to tell him that he is an ass and doesnt think about anything he does. That he is losing a loyal employee and not on good terms. That I will be leaving with malice and ill will towards him and him alone. Not the restaurant or the managers or other employees but only because he refuses to think of anyone else. 3 of the 4 take out people are leaving, 2 of the 5 salad, and 4 of the 6 line cooks. Probably a bunch of the servers too.

Do you have some proof that he didn't deserve it on merit as well? And there are a shitload of problems with the merit mentality as well. One thing, most people learn by doing. All opportunities to learn has been closed off, which is unfair for the TC. For another, some people doing another job may have an incredible potential on another position and you will never know until you put that person in that position or give that person a trial run of sorts, which of course is impaired by the same problem.

You sound like you haven't had a manager position before tbh. The guy's boss is a scumbag for going against his word in the first place or is a horrible boss for even saying nobody has a chance in the first place. Way to decrease morale for no reason

Find a new job and just stop showing up one day is what I'd like to tell you but since you've worked there so long put in two weeks notice instead so you can use them as a reference. One past experience. Which was a server who became manager 5 months ago. 4 months ago she found out her mom had cancer, 3 months ago they said it was looking good and last week she was told her mom has in stage 4 and has no hope of surviving. They told her she should go back to being a server so she can see her mom as much as possible. Now a new girl that has worked there a month is becoming a manager because she is new enough and none of us will even be considered. Thats what all the other managers told me the bosss reason was.

No. Dishwasher for 3, then moved to salad and last year take out. And its not take out like McDonalds. We are in charge of making pizzas and a bunch of appetizers, taking calls including setting up catering events, packing catering jobs and a bunch more stuff. Its actully more work than cooking.

I want an asshole with a degree in business management. Someone with 3 years experience as a part time barista but a 4 year degree. fuck everyone that worships at the alter of degrees. I have yet to meet a single degree holder in management that actually knows what the fuck they're even doing.

We dont even have people with degrees as managers. We have the bosss daughter, a woman who started when the restaurant opened who was a cook at the older location owned by my bosss brother, and a woman who was a manager at a different restaurant, who was promoted from a server there.

Assuming we're getting the full story, your boss' reason doesn't make any rational sense.

Continue working there while you apply for other jobs. Once you receive an offer that's better than staying where you are, request a meeting with your boss, tell him what you want, use the other opportunity as leverage if you have to, and be fully prepared to walk if he doesn't budge.
