Fusion followed by Other M.

I started with Return of Samus many years ago, and enjoyed it but the game is rather limited compared to later games. Super I played on Wii long after playing later games so I was spoiled by series improvements. Fusion was my second game in the series, and while linear compared to some of the series, it seems the ones I enjoyed most are all guilty of that.

While some might hate that I listed Other M, I found how it moved the 2D playstyle into a 3D world to be more to my interest than the Prime style. The pixel hunts and story may be terrible, but the gameplay was highly enjoyable though too easy at points.

I'm still looking for a copy of Zero Mission. The official remake of 2 is something I wanted to try, but the requirement of multiple Amiibo figurines to unlock all content pissed me off. If it ever drops to a cheap price (unlikely as it is given it is Nintendo, their eShop still has launch games at full price in my region), I'll consider it.

Definitely Zero Mission. I really like AM2R too but it makes sense to omit it.

I always loved Super. I never played the original SNES version but I first played it via masterpieces from Brawl. I then got it on VC and it was p amazing

Was originally going to include it, but there is more then 10 games in the series so changed it to only 2d ones, forgot to change topic title though

Haven't played samus returns yet

Super Metroid, but just by a hair. Fusion is second only because I think they could have done more with the X stuff rather then relegate it to essentially another form of energy pickups.

I also like Other M, but it is probably the second worst "2D" game next to Return of Samus.

Voted ZM. Don't really play consoles, handhelds have always been my main area of interest. I am sure SM is great to people that have played it.
