I know the director does I don't think he would have submitted art he was not happy with. The issue with the art is this. 1. The original art showed the characters from a different perspective. The new art is not just different, it's also painted from a different perspective. The old perspective matched the perspective for walking around the maps, where as the new perspective matches the side view battle. 2. While all the characters and monsters had re-done sprites, the backgrounds were not changed, and the hi-res sprites mixed with the original backgrounds creates a bit of a disconnect. Overall the art is good, it just doesn't hit nostalgia buttons.
