I had a conversation from my mom today that went:

1. her complaining about how bad the new Trek is

2. talking about how good TNG is

3. her vigorously defending Voyager as a series she liked

I'm withholding judgment on DIS, but TNG is great. VOY is fun in a stupid kind of way, though I'm sure that most people who like it like it for different reasons.

I loved Voyager for the characters, enough to turn a blind eye to most of the bad elements of the show.

Except for that one episode.

Conversely, The Next Generation, at least the later seasons, were sort of enjoyable for me, and at the time I was too young to appreciate TOS (what can I say, the newer Star Treks spoiled me).

I loved Deep Space Nine almost as much as Voyager - though nowadays, I think I would definitely enjoy it more.

I haven't checked out Discovery yet.

And I hated Enterprise because it just lacked that Star Trek feel - which was half the point of the show, that this was taking place before humans became like they were in the series - but even so, it didn't have enough to interest me. Also, the opening theme song, while a decent song in its own right, is just... not Star Trek.

I assume you mean Threshold, which most people say is the worst episode of all of Star Trek. I don't know if I agree with that, but it's got to be in the bottom three.

To be fair, I haven't experienced the entire Star Trek franchise (in fact I'm not sure I ever will) but I have a hard time believing any episode is worse than that one.

It's definitely the worst Voyager episode, at the very least.

(Voyager is definitely one of those shows where the writing may be bad, but the characters and the actors salvage it, even as they couldn't agree on Janeway's character)

I can give you a quick list of the worst episode of each show:
TOS: And the Children Shall Lead... because the plot makes no sense and the villain is played by a lawyer because the producer thought it would be cheaper than hiring an actor, and the guy has exactly the level of acting chops you would expect.
TNG: Shades of Grey because it's a clip show quickly slapped together during a writer's strike.
DS9: Profit and Lace because it's about sex change operations for wacky hijinks purposes.
VOY: Threshold because you know.
ENT: A Night in Sickbay because it's just really, really, really bad.

The funny thing is, I remember enjoying that episode.

Not that I would defend it, mind you.

oh

The crew figures out how to go faster than infinity miles per hour, which causes you to occupy all space in the universe simultaneously. When you return to normal, your body undergoes evolution since humans are meant to evolve into salamanders in the future. Then they copulate, lay eggs, have the eggs hatch, and have the children be ready to take care of themselves in the space of three days.

I'm still more attached to TOS, but TNG was really a fun watch when I finally got around to it last year.

I was listening to an interview with Rainn Wilson, and he really sold me on the show getting more to the basics of Trek on Discovery. For some reason I thought Discovery was set in between TOS and TNG, but apparently it's set 20 years before?

Anyways, my roommate is watching TNG for the first time, and the first season is better than I remember it so far. Wesley isn't even annoying yet.

Unless DIS completely changes things, by the first two episodes I can say it's not about Trek's basics, it's about its own thing. Which is okay:
