Pick a side. Which console do you prefer?

In light of the SNES Classic launch, I thought it would be a good idea to revisit this. I don't know where I stand, personally. Probably PS2? But the SNES has Super Metroid...

Does this include the Backwards Compatibility of the PS2?

Regardless, I think I would side with the PS2 here. I think SNES has some extremely high quality games but PS2 has a larger quantity of great games

PS2 still the GOAT console.

PS4 trying to get there with all the PS2 remasters.

I think that's personal. If you're coming into a PS2 now, in 2017, the ability to play PS1 games is probably not going to be that big a deal to you. If you missed out on the PSX but bought a PS2 early and played old, cheap, great PS1 games while waiting for the next big thing, it probably mattered a great deal.

Neither of these systems are my platform of choice. But they are the two most frequently cited platforms when people list their favourite.

I guess the 360 should probably be on that list now too, huh.

I'm "low" in the sense that I'd take the PS3, PSP, PC and DS over it, but man the PS2 has a killer list of great games on it.

I think where SNES has the edge is that its great games are more immediate. You load up SMW, LttP, or Super Metroid, and you're right into the action. PS2 games aren't as effortlessly replayable.

the ps2 completely lacks 2d games which is my favorite genre. I don't think you can even name one? well, maybe some fighting compilations. I'd go with the 360 over it pretty easily. sucks about the JRPGs though.

Right now I'm in a very old school mood so I almost wanted to vote SNES, but the PS2 has a far deeper library that I haven't explored yet, and has the bigger variety in genres and heavy hitters.

After the top 30 SNES games there's not that much I'm interested in, even if I still like middling platformers.

PS2, pretty easily. I mean SNES had some really great games. But PS2 did too, and I think it had more of them. And I think a lot of the SNES games I played just weren't that good.

Ps2 by a mile

But at this point most of my favorite PS2 AND PS3 games are on PS4 so that's probably my favorite console overall

PS2 was in many ways more of a successor to the PS1 than the PS3 was to the PS2 - or the PS4 was to the PS3.

For starters, full backwards compatibility meant that the PS2 library included the PS1 library.

Second of all, many games that started on the PS1 either continued or had successors on the PS2. Like Crash Bandicoot's developers making Jak and Daxter, or Spyro's developers making Ratchet and Clank, stuff like that. It was a new era with new ideas.

That being said, the SNES is important too and I very much love it and its games.

It's close. Mario All-Stars, Mario World, Clock Tower & Street Fighter II, beat 'em ups like Turtles in Time & Captain America, NHL '94 vs rhythm games (Amplitude, Guitar Hero, DDR), NCAA Football, Burnout, Fatal Frame. Gave SNES the slight edge at the moment.

That's a tough one. For me, SNES has more of my all-time favorites, while PS2 has more games I like but fewer I love. In the end I had to give it to SNES but it could go either way.

Both lose out to the NES.

PS2 by a landslide. As much as I loved the SNES as a kid it's really hard to go back and play those games now. Even the best games still feel old and limited and can't hold my interest anymore. Same with PS1 tbh.

SNES without question(especially if you include Super Famicom). SMW and Super Metroid are probably top 5 games ever created. Also has the best mario kart, best zelda, best Final Fantasy, best Street Fighter, and I could easily list a dozen more top tier games that are still incredible to play. 16-bit games have aged better than any other console generation.

PS2 has a lot of great games, but most of them have aged poorly and the (now-primitive) 3D graphics of that time have really not held their appeal.

I've played some SNES games, but most people consider the best just don't really do much for me. Chrono Trigger is constantly hailed as one of the greatest JRPGs ever and it's like a 7-7.5 for me. Same for Super Mario RPG, but I don't think it's praised quite as much. I didn't really like ALttP much either when I played it for the first time probably like 2-3 years ago or something.

Ps1 > Ps2 IMO.

I can name a few best games ever from the SNES, but the only game I can think of that I would call that on the Ps2 is Shadow of the Colossus. But I haven't played Okami.

I would go so bold as to say the SNES is one of my least favorite consoles. Everything on it even remotely worth playing has been remastered in a way that makes it better on another console.

The problem is SNES was brought in right before a lot of really useful standards were developed for games. So controls, menus, mechanics feel off for almost every game.

It's not a bad console by any means, but if I had to wipe an entire console's game collection off the map, I'd hit SNES in a second.
