Just start writing garbage or stream of conscious stuff and then go from there. Starting with an empty page is the biggest initial barrier for writer's block.

As an author, you write out the bare structure of the story and then flair it up later. You'd be surprised with how much you can cover in half an hour.

In my limited experience, you can't really force yourself to do it.

I've tried and I end up just losing interest really quickly. I typically have to be inspired to start writing at all.

I write in a general direction of where I might want to go, kinda without too much real effort put into it. Then I look back at it, read it over a couple times and realize how much it sucks.

That makes me wanna do better and keep writing until I'M happy

Did you write a story about Death accepting snacks in exchange for sparing someone?
Or did you write a story about Dearh refusing a payment of snacks because he didn't want to kill someone?
Or did you accept snacks as payment for writing a story about Death not killing someone?

I haven't done any prose in a while, but when I'm writing poetry or music, I'll start with something really basic, and then dress it up and fuck with it.

So, for example, I was diddling around on my keyboard one day, and played a three note motif that I thought sounded cool. (M2 up, P4 down, in this case it was Bb, C, G.) So I started fucking with it and improvising shit, and before I knew it I had spent two weeks writing a five minute piece of music.

I think it helps a lot to build upon a few small ideas rather than to go full-bore into large stuff. Hell, even starting with a tired cliche or trope can be helpful (like writing a poem in iambic pentameter or blank verse).

Basically, the more limits you put upon yourself, the easier it is to be creative. I remember there was a topic on here a few years ago where the TC asked us to write a story using 15 words total. We got a lot of neat ideas (and of course plenty of bullshit).
