So, when an application asks for job references from people, and they can't be from people related to you, can't you list someone like a step father or something? I mean, they're not related to you so?

Depends on the job. Usually I'd say you can list anyone as long as they're a good liar.

I think the spirit of them saying they can't be related to you is that it's somebody who has a less biased view on your character e.g. a former boss or teacher so I would think step-relatives have the same problem

As long as they don't have your same name, who gives a shit? As I recall, you're quite young so it's kind of expected.

But you'll want to build relationships with your co-workers so you can use them for references in future applications. That said, I don't think in my numerous jobs have I ever had an employer call my references. Barring government work of course.

Same, no one I ever listed as a reference ever told me they were called by a potential employer. I don't know if they really do anything with them or just weed people out who can't think of anyone to list.
