Do they think cars run on 'please's and 'thank you's? So many people keep asking me for rides but when I ask for help with gas money, they get upset at me.

Just recently, an older coworker asked me to take him home, which is "just up the block." He lives in the complete opposite direction of me and it would take me around 40 minutes to drop him off and head home, whereas I live only 12 minutes away. I told him that I'm not going that way and if he really wants me to take him, he's gotta give me gas money. He told me he has no money since he spent it all booking his flight for Jamaica. Wtf? What exactly will you be doing there if you have no money anyway? So I told him he's gotta look for someone who lives closer and he starts getting mad at me and saying I'm cold and some other nonsense.

Something similar happened with 3 other people in the past 2 weeks. I just don't understand people.

That is part of the problem, yeah. I'm friendly towards everyone and I don't mind doing certain favors for people from time to time but since I got my license a mere 3 months ago, people keep flocking to me to take them home or other places. I drove out of my way for some people because they paid me, then later some people said they would "pay me back" later and never did. So I ask for money right away now and that's been getting people all antsy for some reason.

I had a classmate that was like this. I offered to drive him home one time as we had to discuss what we would be doing for a class project anyway. After that he thought I would always drive him home and got a bit upset with me when I started asking for money lol. I told him he could buy me alcohol instead if he was going to be a bitch about it, thus began our friendship.

used to have this problem delivering newspapers. usually drunks with no way to get home would literally just open one of the doors and sit in my car while I was delivering to some houses.

came back to my car once to a guy who was slowly freezing to death holding a half eaten donut in one hand and a box of donuts in the other. he was trying to get into the back seat but couldn't figure out how to get passed the wall of newspapers. I kept showing him the large 7-Eleven sign less than a half-block away but I'm not sure he got it. (maybe drunks can't seek refuge at 7-Eleven since they're drunk?)

once a semi-hot girl (she kind of stunk though) just up and sat in my passenger seat (on top of my 'active pile' of papers). it sounded like she wanted me to take her halfway across the city. I think she eventually made up a fake address to take her to (3333 33ST?), but it turned out that address actually existed on my route, so I took her there and dropped her off (maybe it wasn't made up and she did actually live there, I'll never know). (looking up the address... I don't think I actually left her in the right place, if that was a real address. oh well. that was like 15 years ago.)

If they buy something they can stay there for a little while. But it's basically loitering and I'm pretty sure places can call the cops on people for that.

Aren't you supposed to ask someone to leave first? The distinction between "customer" and "loiterer" is kinda' blurry, especially after they buy something.

mostly I was worried he was going to freeze to death. it was maybe -20C out, he was in a t-shirt, with a runny nose and shivering from the cold, carrying the stupid donuts, and could barely focus on what I was saying.

I don't really ask for gas money. The last time I expected someone to give me gas money was when I drove them an hour away dropped them off and picked them up the next day, because 4 hours of driving so they could get laid is a lot to ask. Although I have also driven someone 2 hours away and back without expecting any gas money because I got to enjoy the trip while I was there.

I don't think so. If someone buys a pop and then just sits outside the store for an hour, they're loitering. It's a bit different for something like a restaurant though.

I understand why you wanted to help him out. What I said was about when you asked if drunks couldn't seek refuge at 7-11.

It's still a blurry line. What if someone buys a hot dog, too? What if there's a arcade machine? It seems like arcade machines would encourage loitering, actually. It's funny that some convenience stores have those.

It's really not a blurry line. If you go to a 7-11, and they don't have tables, you buy your stuff then leave. It's that simple.

If you dont ever say "NO" to people then they will simply walk right over you your whole life dude. Thats whats its all about sometimes, ya know? Gotta say no sometimes and if they don't like that? Whelp... they can fuck off then. You gotta think about you, and not think about other peoples problems.

Both good advice, thanks. I've never liked when people are upset with me so I was definitely a doormat in the past, but I've been putting my foot down more recently and I just gotta accept that people will get upset and that I shouldn't care.

Even if they have tables and you bought stuff, there is a limit to how long you can stay. My manager had us call the cops on a couple homeless people because they were spending several hours taking up the tables inside. As I worked overnight and she wasn't there, I let them stay until about an hour before she came in when I would ask them to go to the grocery store across the street in case she came in early.
