The Conjuring was a really intense, fun thrill ride to see in theaters. It definitely had very diminished returns upon additional viewings, though. The sequel is arguably scarier, although the exorcism scene in the first is....fuck.

It may sound contradictory for me to say this but I actually find this scene kind of good. I really like the omnipresent Nun painting in the scene and the music that plays fits really well, playing with Catholic imagery and sound. The Nun's shadow moving into the painting is an extremely cool visual and so are the hands coming around to grab the painting before it bursts out of the wall. I know deep down it's all a jump scare trick, but I think it's well-crafted before hand and makes the scene feel dreadful and chilling as well, and I give much credit to Vera Farmiga for selling the whole thing.

Importance: 7

Based on the well-known short story by Washington Irving, Disney's The Legend of Sleepy Hollow is an absolute classic that deserves to be seen by everyone, just for its end sequence alone. The story concerns one Ichabod Crane, a school teacher newly arrived in the town of Sleepy Hollow, a town renowned for its creepy folklore. There are two main traits that define Ichabod's character: his love of food, and his intense superstition. Yet, he's also quite the ladies man, and starts to court Katrina van Tassel, the daughter of the richest man in the village. Of course, this doesn't sit well with Brom Bones, who tries his best to stop Ichabod from being with Katrina in increasingly comical ways. The first 20 minutes of the short is all about this romance and competition, and it's fun, light-hearted, humorous, and even has a few catchy tunes. However, things take a stark turn when Brom discovers Ichabod's superstitious ways, and delivers the tale of the Headless Horseman at a Halloween party, which is also the best song in the short. This scares Ichabod out of his wits, and the last 10 minutes sees Ichabod coming home from the party, in a paranoia-fueled animation sequence that eventually leads into a terrifying chase with the Headless Horseman (who looks god damn awesome by the way) and the disappearance of Ichabod. As the legend goes, he was "spirited away" by the horseman according to townfolk.

Maybe this short isn't the scariest thing in the world, but there's something to be said about the way it treats the folklore and ramps up the tension steadily in the final minutes, whilst still keeping some elements of comedy. Both the short and original story to me is more about the way stories like this influence us, make us wary of the night time, make us believe it can really happen. It's a good old-fashioned yarn that don't really come around too often anymore and is the perfect story for setting the mood on any Halloween night.

72. Gregory Horror Show (16.5 points)
Nominated by: ihatethiscpu
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VJJHtAXywk8

Importance: 3
Fear: 5.5
Snake: 8

Gregory Horror Show is an incredibly original 3D Japanese animated series and also a PS2 survival horror game, which I played years before finding out it was actually based on a show. I've only seen season one, but I've absolutely loved ever second of it. The series is told nearly entirely from first-person, which basically makes you the protagonist of the show, checking you right into the sanity draining hotel owned by Gregory, an elderly mouse. The series is incredibly reminiscent of Silent Hill and even Eternal Darkness, but told through the eyes of Alice in Wonderland. The poor businessman that checks into the hotel is drained of his personality and now feels confined forever at the hotel, finding regular life too boring. I love the characters in this show, especially the nurse lizard Catherine, who loves draining blood with her oversized syringe. Trypanophobics beware! The show can be really zany and hilarious at times, and isn't always a non-stop horror fest, its art style alone can be very disarming to the events that happen. I suggest to give it a try, season 1 can be finished in an hour and it's some of the most original horror you'll find.

Nominated by: Simoun
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rSER3yml1iM

Importance: 2
Fear: 9
Snake: 6

Talk about disturbing. What starts out as an innocent, unassuming child-like scene of wonderment and imagination quickly delves into a nightmarish snuffing of innocence and beauty. About a minute in, things turn blood red and finger-like objects start to burn parts of the picture, and even half of one of the two main girls in the video. One of the most disturbing parts of the video for me starts at 2:23, where a finger starts touching and penetrating one of the drawn girls private areas, and I feel filthy just saying that. Things grow increasingly more violent and gruesome as the video goes on, until the scene rarely returns to its bright state and is absolutely dripping with gore and cruel torture by the mysterious limbs of the person overlooking the setting. Add on top of that a piercing crying scream throughout the video, and you have one of the scariest videos on the internet. You'll almost thank the cruel overseer at the end when they finally stomp out and end the scene for good.

I still get the shivers whenever I rewatch this video. There's some very obvious metaphors to the destruction of childhood innocence here, but what always intrigues me is the amount of effort the creator puts in all his videos, and in differing mediums (as you saw in my other nom).

If you want to be disillusioned, the creator has put up a How It's Made video too, all to the tune of upbeat music. I think that's what I mainly like about nana825763, is that he treats all his works like an art form and compartmentalizes his desire to scare and his desire to show off as an artist.

70. Wednesday Addams (17 points)
Nominated by: Anagram
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2V8wDnSopaY

Importance: 7
Fear: 4
Snake: 6

Wednesday Addams is the quintessential goth. Pale, emotionless, and always dressed in black, Wednesday is a normal girl as long as you consider raising spiders, cutting heads off your dolls, burying living cats, and trying to drop your newborn sibling off the roof normal. Still, as scary as all that sounds, it's all done in a dark comedic manner and isn't really meant to be taken seriously, and deep down, Wednesday really is just a normal child and can actually be quite chipper and sweet in the original TV series at least. There was a series on Youtube called Adult Wednesday Addams which was a viral hit, and it showed Wednesday as an adult with the same dark traits she had as a child but much, much worse. Unfortunately, the episodes were taken down due to copyright infringement, but I think they definitely showcased a natural evolution to her character if the series ever wanted to go down that route. Wednesday remains the template for which all evil children are built around and but none of them pull off that sickly sweetness as good as she does.

I didn't consider it very scary, but it is pretty fucked up. I wonder if the artist feels we are actually at the mercy of a malevolent god - one who doesn't mind us stewing in destruction and suffering, sometimes taking part in it - or if it's just a commentary on how destructive we are as people, or if there's any point to it at all.

69. Silent Hill's Otherworld Midwich Elementary School (Video game area) (17 points)
Nominated by: Axl_rose_85
https://youtu.be/Wy34ChMlvow?t=55m26s

Importance: 3
Fear: 7
Snake: 7

And to think this school was already creepy enough when Arnold Schwarzenegger was the substitute teacher there. Midwich Elementary School is the series' first taste of the Otherworld, turning the already terrifying fog world into a nightmarish realm of rusty grates, filthy blood-stained walls, and remixed enemies and items, accompanied by an airhorn and pounding soundtrack that keeps your heart beating right out of your chest. I remember being astonished that the area I had almost become comfortable with became so radically different, the familiar became alien again and it kept the horror and tension high. It's an ingenious idea looking at it from a pure gameplay perspective; it expands the life span of an area and doesn't feel cheap, like you're retreading the same stuff you already went through. Despite it keeping the same layout as the original area, it feels nothing like what you've explored already. I don't think Midwich's Otherworld is one of the strongest in the series or even the game, but it still has some incredibly memorable moments. Finding the hanging guy in the bathroom stall who's nothing but flesh and bone, Cheryl calling you on the phone, and don't forget the god damn locker room (which is set up brilliantly beforehand in the normal school area). It's an incredible introduction to the Otherworld concept, and it only gets more insane from here on.

68. Treehouse of Horror V (Simpsons episode) (17 points)
Nominated by: Xeybozn
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sx6Lz0rzGX8

Importance: 4.5
Fear: 4.5
Snake: 8

Perhaps the most classic episode of The Simpsons Treehouse of Horror series, it shows the Simpsons at their highest peak of parody prowess, dark comedy, and ingenious scene crafting. The episodes plays its best hand first, with The Shinning, an obvious parody of you-know-what. Homer emulating Jack Torrance is easily one of the best and funniest moments in the entire show, and I love seeing Homer constantly breaking through the wrong doors with the axe and changing the famous "Here's Johnny" quote. It's perfectly timed and executed flawlessly. It's followed up with the equally strong and in my opinion funnier Time and Punishment, which sees Homer turning a toaster into a time machine and executing a classic butterfly effect where at first accidentally kills a mosquito, then keeps going back to fix things but only makes them worse. The highlight of this short is when Homer seems to have the perfect life in the future, except donuts don't exist. Homer leaves, and we see the heartbreaking follow-up to that, which I won't spoil for anyone because it needs to be seen to be felt. The last short is the weakest but also the scariest. Due to budget cuts and overcrowding detention rooms, the school cafeteria is forced to serve horrid meat, leading Principal Skinner to start putting the bad kids into the school lunch. There's so many horrifying implications to be found in the short, and that's not even minding the cannibalism of schoolchildren. The idea of "grade F meat" alone is enough to make the stomach churn. Finally, the episode is capped off with The Simpsons turning inside out due to some fog, and it's the downright creepiest part visually of the whole package. This Treehouse of Horror episode is essential in many ways, and you'd be remiss to skip it.

A legend that has come to light more and more in recent memory, the black-eyed children is an admittedly creepy one as far as these types of urban legends go. Usually, one or more creepy little children will appear at your doorstep and ask to be let in. It will almost feel like you're under a hypnotic spell and you will feel nervous, sweat profusely, and feel a huge sense of unease. The story first came to mainstream attention was the Brian Bethel incident, when in the midst of paying his internet bill under the dim light of a movie theater, two boys knocked on his driver's side window and had the same black, soulless eyes of legend. They asked for a ride, but a rightly scared Bethel felt something was wrong and backed up as the kids screamed at him, disappearing moments later. After sending some e-mails to colleagues about the incident, the story spread and the rest is history. Many people since have claimed to have encounters, but there's not really any veracity to these claims. Personally, they all sound implausible to me, even the original Bethel incident, and some stories as detailed in the first link (an interesting read by the way) actually date back as early as the 1950s. To me, it's an enjoyable, creepy legend, but I don't buy that there's much truth to it and I will enjoy it for what it is.

Candle Cove is one of the OG creepypastas and one of the first I remember reading. Delivered in a forum-style format, the story felt real and believable, relying on shaky memories of the past to build-up to more and more information about the short-lived show, Candle Cove, each memory becoming creepier than the last, until they're describing the monstrous Skin-Taker and an episode where all it did was stand there and scream. The best part of this story is it's ambiguity and that's why the internet style it's told in works so well. Any one of the people relating their memories could simply be manufacturing past events due to the influences of others, and it all ties in to that powerful aspect of the human imagination, where mike_painter65 is told by his mother that all he watched of Candle Cove was just static. Our imagination fills in the gaps and nobody really remembers perfectly what they did as a kid, which could often times be weird but made perfect sense to us at the time. This is what makes Candle Cove a timeless story and something everyone can relate to in some way, even if it's not as horrifying as this particular tale.

The song that will be stuck in your head for eternity. Starting off as a simple parody of 80s comics, you quickly start to realize the short lives up to its title as the show introduces added family members, a police procedural element, and even this deranged slasher, until it gets completely out of hand with superhero transformations, a space opera, a doctor drama, and Smarf. All the while, the same old chipper tune plays throughout, aside from a horrifying interlude where the cast members are running around the house (with their title credits forever in front of them) from the said deranged slasher (who's also the only one without a credit). I like to think he's actually the only sane one, trying to get out of this nightmare they call a show and is actually doing them a favor be releasing them from their pain. It's an awesome send-up of nostalgic pop culture and jumping the shark moments that every show experiences at some point, and almost like Candle Cove, that underlying creepiness you just can't explain.

64. Erma (Erma) (17.5 points)
Nominated by: Pirateking2000
https://tapas.io/episode/255222

Importance: 5.5
Fear: 3
Snake: 9

Erma is an absolutely adorable light horror web-comic starring the titular Erma herself, who is basically Samara Morgan if she went to school, went on playdates, and had babysitters. Equipped with all the classic J-horror powers, this comic is hilarious in its simplicity, riffing on classic horror settings, characters, and tropes to juxtapose Erma being raised in a normal setting. One of the things I laughed hardest at was when Erma's mother comes crawling out of the TV to give Erma her lunch which she forgot. Erma herself would later use the TV trick to go to a football game and stop the opposing team from scoring. This stuff is just so clever! One of the first major story arcs is Erma trying to scare her babysitter but failing which really showcases a lot of the horror powers she has. The ending to that arc is great too with the previous babysitter being sent to a mental institution. It would actually make a great movie! Erma herself is so cute and innocent that you can't help but have a smile on your face the whole you're reading. Sure, she wants to be scary, but she also just wants to be a normal kid. A normal kid who can turn her head completely around anyway.

Might have to check that out.

Samara is the only horror character that still scares me to this day that web comic might help me alleviate that (admittedly irritationable) fear.

There's a bunch of little crossover shots in between parts where she hangs out with (or scares / messes with) other horror characters
