didn't like this. i disliked the sound of the rapping and i disliked the beat. interesting to listen to a song from a genre i would normally never, ever listen to, though!

i remember when steiner and extha would spam the board with posts about how much they loved machinae supremacy. (ok, it wasn't quite "crack the skye" level bad, but...)

didn't care for this one, i've heard way better machinae supremacy songs. i guess i should point out that i'm not a metal fan at all, though - the only metal subgenres i give a shit about are prog, power, symphonic (sometimes) and old-school metal like sabbath (ok, that's not actually a "subgenre") - so the odds of me going "OH FUCK YEAH THIS WAS AWESOME" about a metal song are actually pretty low. didn't hate this song at all but it was kinda forgettable.

Is this like Japanese rap-rock? I liked the beat well enough and the force of the vocals but foreign language songs are hard for me to get into because I like to be able to understand the lyrics too.

As I am in a foreign land, I will use my lazy card.

Crystal Fairy - Drugs on a Bus
Sounds exactly as chunky as the lineup would indicate, and though I have no idea who La Butcherettes are I dig that singer's style. The song is punchy, well-produced yet raw in that early 90's way. Solid genre pick.

AFI - Aurelia
Ooh he's calling out pitchy concertgoers! This chorus is really catchy, I've listened to
the song three times and I've already forgotten 90% of it but the line "BARKing IN the WRONG key" is
going to be stuck in my head for a while, for better or worse.

Minimall - Don't Tell Me
One of these girls admins a facebook group I'm in so I'm actually familiar with this! It's not normally the type of thing I listen to but if you're down for some cutesy pop rock it hits the mark.

Agargara - Hall of Dry Yeast
Damn that's juicy! Sick beats, really interesting chord progression, it keeps weaving in new flavors right up to the climax. Relaxing but energizing at the same time. Easy favorite so far, this appeals to me on every level.

Kamasi Washington - Truth
O glorious jazz! I am extremely down for this loose spiritual vibe. It's uplifting, full of substance, pure and honest and human. I should have checked this guy out already! Tough call between this and the Agargara song.

St. Vincent - New York
Well, this certainly isn't what I listen to St. Vincent for. It's not terrible, it just doesn't grab my attention in the way that her more 'out there' stuff does. I'm not gonna say she sold out (she's a friggen sellout dude!) but this does feel like too-safe territory for her talent.

Talking Heads - (Nothing But) Flowers
It's the most Caribbean love letter to the urban sprawl ever heard! I adore the cynical storytelling and whatever is going on in the pre-chorus is fantastic. This is a tune I'm familiar with from early childhood but haven't heard in a long time, so there's a peculiar nostalgia to it - makes me feel young and old at once, past and future.

Alan Kuo - If There's Still
Mandarin looks scary as fuck dude. That's what that is right? Besides having no idea what they were saying I wasn't into the tone either rapper brought (thought one of them sounded like Fred Durst) and the beat didn't do it for me. It's hard to scale the language barrier with such a lyrically focused form of songwriting.

Machinae Supremacy - Dreadnaught
Great intro riff. I was into this until the guy started singing, then it kinda had to work to win me back. I should have expected that voice though because I still remember that bitchin Britney Spears cover they didfrom one of the original album of the month topics, and I think I'm going to listen to that now instead. This does have one cool riff though.

The Killers - Wonderful, Wonderful
Brandon Flowers trades Mr. Brightside for the Lizard King in a turn of bombastic psychedelia. It's a far cry from my expectation and I love that - always nice to hear a big ticket act transform and experiment with their aesthetic. There's a lot of sonic variety here (what is that shearing noise at 2:22?) and the breakthrough in last couple of minutes is immensely satisfying.

Destinty Potato - Indifferent
Intense, but gentle? The band's name is Destiny Potato. It's got a decent chorus and a nice change around two and a half minutes in. Enjoyable for its duration but I'm not in love with it...I could take it or leave it...what's the word I'm looking for here

Really close between the top three this week.

listened to this one on spotify because the YT video didn't work for me. obviously the killers are a massive band but i've never really listened to their stuff aside from the singles. decent song. maybe it was a bit too long - i started to get a little bored at the 4 minute mark - but i liked it.

Crystal Fairy - Drugs on the Bus
The vocal work in this is fucking amazing. Rest of it is fun but nothing special.

AFI - Aurelia
Fun but nothing stood out about it.

Minimall - Don't Tell Me
Fun bit of poppiness.

Agarara - Dear Future
Way too busy and not in the way I enjoy.

Kamasi Washington - Truth
Long ass song.Pretty fun chill thing though for sure.

St. Vincent - New York
hm I wasn't a huge fan of her voice. Liked the music a lot but that hurt it.

Talking Heads - Nothing But Flowers
Talking Heads is great. Ton of fun. Beautiful chill song.

Con Funk Shun - Let Me put Love on your Mind
It's... decent. Didn't love it but didn't dislike it either.

Alan Kuo feat JV - If There's Still
No idea what they were saying but this was pretty hype.

Machinae Supremacy - Dreadnought
Good fun shit. Not as good as my top three but close.

The Killers - Wonderful, Wonderful.
Prolly give fourth to this and fifth to Dreadnought but it's close. I really Brandon Flowers' voice and it's impressively creative.

Destiny Potato - Indifferent
Ugh this is so good also. Her voice and how it contrasts with the much... rougher almost instruments is great.

Indifferent gets my vote but it nearly went to both (nothing but) flowers or Drugs on a Bus instead.

kinda tired so quick closing thoughts

1st - Wonderful Wonderful - dope af, really impressive when a band can evolve their sound like this over time and still stay really good
2nd - (Nothing But) Flowers - as I said, great lesser-known 'Heads' song, like most of them are. nearly won it.
3rd - Indifferent - great metal, a genre i generally don't like. i like that the song has a feel of both 6/8 and a swung 4/4
Dreadnaught - really cool guitar work. not a fan of the vocals though.
Hall of Dry Yeast - this one grew on me. i also realized it reminded me of a street fighter remix Mycro nominated in my VGM ranking years ago:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k4BAwegZE6s

Truth - ssoooooooooo long but kinda nice to just leave on while doin' other stuff. again, choir is really a nice touch.
New York - kinda 'meh' about this one now. i dunno, it's ok but not really my style.
Drugs on a Bus - cool drums, but like some of the other songs, vocals didn't do it for me
If There's Still (?) - i mean, it's no 'Daikenkai'
Let Me Put Love On Your Mind - ok background/foreplay music.
Aurelia - only one i'd straight-up say i didn't like

Aurelia- davey always has a nice voice, but this song doesn't really stand out too much to me. And that's coming from a massive AFI fan, even with newer stuff. I usually expect more from the instrumentals as Jade, Hunter and Adam are fantastic musicians but they don't seem to do too much on this song. It's fine, but there are better songs on the same album.

Don't Tell Me- alright but super amateurish at the same time? The production and even her voice seems not QUITE right. It has moments that I like and others that aren't so great.

Hall of Dry Yeast- enjoyable, good browsing music. Would be a song on a really good video game soundtrack.

Truth- another very enjoyable song that is excellent browsing music. I'm usually a vocals person but I actually wish it didn't that that singing in parts of it and just went instrumentals only. Singing wasn't for that long which is good though. Also kind of got flashbacks of playing The Sims, specifically builder mode, in the beginning couple of minutes. Which is a good thing.

New York- I quite like it. Annie is super talented in general so I was pretty sure I would enjoy this going in. It's a bit haunting but hopeful at the same time. I agree it's not her usual style but she goes for it and achieves a really nice song. Also I REALLY adore her saying motherfucker. I have a thing for pop artists who aren't afraid to curse.

(Nothing But) Flowers- really funny, quirky song. I especially like the line "if this is paradise, I wish I had a lawnmower". I like the lyrics and theme of the song a bit more than the song itself and how it sounds, but I still like it enough.

Let Me Put Love On Your Mind- oh holy shit I fuck with aaaaalllll of this. The guitar, the vocals, the smoothness, everything. Killed it this week with this song.

If There's Still- I've fucked with asian hip hop for awhile now, primarily Korean but most in general. I dig this, feel like the chorus could be perhaps a BIT stronger but it works and the verses are good.

Dreadnaught- doesn't really break the mold but it's solid. I like the main riff of it the most. Vocals are fine, could be better but it's fine. The little break in the bridge is pretty nice actually.

Wonderful, Wonderful- another haunting song, great production. I particularly like the verses. I've listened to this album already being a pretty big Killers fan but I think this song got better for me on this second listen. Very good.

Indifferent- So I've known about this song for a few years now, probably around 2015 or so? Steiner and I had a discussion about how they don't really have a song that reaches the high of this one, which is disappointing. It's a very cool song. Verses especially.
