I remember back when the iPhone was still relatively new and I started to hear emoji... I rejected it for the longest time but I've basically given up now. Although the Emoji Movie *cringe* makes me want to stop using either emoji or emoticons all together.

I saw emojis as a general standard set of accepted emoticons. Like each site can have a different looking smiley face emoji or sad emoji. While emoticons are generally more open-ended and not standard, which gets you random animated emoticons of a rotating face, or two smileys attacking each other with chairs.
