Kids really don't play with toys anymore. They play with devices like smartphones and tablets.

I haven't seen a kid play with an action figure or barbie doll since I was a kid over 15 years ago.

1. They're super expensive
2. They took out a stupid as fuck loan back in the mid 2000's to expand Kids R Us and Babies R Us I think.
3. Kids don't play with toys, that's more of a nerdy adult hobby now.
4. Nerdy adults buy that shit on the internet or at comic shops now.

I don't think kids stopped playing with toys so much as Amazon/online shopping is just cheaper and easier.

Because they put all their eggs in the basket of game publishers who have for years made it abundantly clear they want to cut retailers out of the picture through digital distribution and made that reality with Toys R Us being their first victim

It's not that they *stopped*, but like they get out of it way quicker.

like usually by age 8 or so I think they're moving onto electronics exclusively.

I mean, this is just me spit balling based on the stuff I see in toy sections but most of the shit seems more geared towards either little kids or adults. There's not much wiggle room between.

Adults wanting toys fascinates me from a psychological perspective. Normally they're popular with kids because they allow an expression of creativity and self. I guess the adult toys do the same, hopefully in a different manner.

I saw diorama building a lot in the GI Joe community back when I collected toys (I also used them for dioramas)

Where as people I knew who collected anime and super hero toys just displayed them on shelves.

Thousands of people of all ages are still buying and playing with toys to this day. I'm 34 and have a rather large Transformers collection of figures and other merchandise. It all comes down to money and availability. There are many stores that carry toys and some are superior to Toys 'R Us. However many bypass this to shop online at sites like BigBadToyStore, Amazon, and others.

Lots of kids still play. Parents shouldn't get them smart phones, tablets, etc at such a young age. I understand a simple phone for communication purposes, but keep the advanced stuff for their mid-late teens.

Toys R Us is only good for when something is discontinued cause you can usually still find it months or years after it's discontinued at TRU because their prices are so fucking expensive.

Hell, you can still pick up some K'nex Mario sets at my local TRU

Yeah the Comic Book Guy in The Simpsons has been on the show since I started watching, so it's definitely an old stereotype.

The thing is, way back then fat nerdy comic type dudes were not nearly as prevelant or "trendy" as they are today, so they collected kid toys like this

VixXojM

today, the toys are marketed towards them so they collect shit like this

Also their videogame section has declined over the past 20 years, when it use to be the huge wall of folding displays full of cards you brought back to the window in the corner.

It's pretty sad. I could never figure out if everything just seemed bigger cause I was a kid or if they actually changed Toys R Us up, but I remember the place being so much better in the 90's. It used to have a layout like a warehouse, but like sometime around 2000 or 2001 they changed the whole store up and the layout was just so fucking bad and they stocked less and less toys it seemed like, but by then I was like 11 or 12 and getting out of toys anyways.

But I have some bomb ass memories of us buying our Super Nintendo there when i was like 3 and going on a huge shopping spree with a shit ton of money I got for X-Mas when I was like 6.

Yup. For my little cousins, I go on Amazon to do Christmas shopping. The prices are way cheaper than other retail stores. And they get delivered to me. Theres zero incentive to have to drive, find parking, deal with huge crowds and long lines.
