He knows that white privilege is keeping his ass afloat

Shut the fuck up

Is there a reason why I should shut up? I feel like I'm on to something here. If nothing else, no one else but a white man could do and say the things Trump did and said, even prior to announcing his 2015 presidential candidacy and actually clench the nomination, let alone the presidency. That is classic white privilege there.

Stupid? No. He knows that white privilege is keeping his ass afloat and that the people who elected him will do literally anything to keep from acknowledging that. So he plays to that base, and makes them feel good about themselves, and they enshrine him. Hell, even white people that don't support him have to downplay his racial politics, because they know that if they dig too deep into unpacking it, what they'll uncover will implicate them too.

He can be stupid in addition to those things.

Alright. I'm merely pointing out that when it comes to navigating the nuance of American racial politics and how they have propped up his campaign, Donald Trump is actually quite clever. Daily, he shows us the new depths we will sink to as a people to justify or equivocate for him, or even merely tolerate him.

I mean...you guys are clearly judging Trump's intelligence by singling out a small sample size of his actions from a small sample size of the overall amount of ways intelligence is used. What's the deal?

It's true. He continues to draw breath. His brain is presumably still regulating his heart beat. He's got a healthy sex drive. He's mostly learned the mechanics of human speech, has a workable grasp of English, and knows words. He has the best words, and everybody, people are saying, people don't say that enough. He has the best words.

So sure, when you ignore surrounding context and lower expectations enough, anyone looks like glowing example. That post, for example is an admirable attempt to try and get this topic to look at the bigger picture of what all comprises human intellect.

Pointing to the FiveThirtyEight article I posted earlier, I still think you are giving him too much credit for some of those things. There are moral and ethical reasons that some people didn't try to go down the race-baiting dog-whistle path that Trump did. It's not just a matter of them not being smart or clever.

Often he does things that get in the way of his own objectives. You can point to any distraction he causes or red meat tweets he sends out as him "changing the narrative" or something like that, but it hasn't made it easier for him to govern. The fact that people defend his actions doesn't make them clever, unless he actually benefits rather than treads water.

Even on the worst day back in high school public speaking class, I (and the rest of my class for that matter) could do better than this butchery of grammar and language:

Look, having nuclearmy uncle was a great professor and scientist and engineer, Dr. John Trump at MIT; good genes, very good genes, OK, very smart, the Wharton School of Finance, very good, very smartyou know, if youre a conservative Republican, if I were a liberal, if, like, OK, if I ran as a liberal Democrat, they would say I'm one of the smartest people anywhere in the worldits true!but when you're a conservative Republican they tryoh, do they do a numberthats why I always start off: Went to Wharton, was a good student, went there, went there, did this, built a fortuneyou know I have to give my like credentials all the time, because were a little disadvantagedbut you look at the nuclear deal, the thing that really bothers meit would have been so easy, and its not as important as these lives are (nuclear is powerful; my uncle explained that to me many, many years ago, the power and that was 35 years ago; he would explain the power of what's going to happen and he was rightwho would have thought?), but when you look at what's going on with the four prisonersnow it used to be three, now its fourbut when it was three and even now, I would have said it's all in the messenger; fellas, and it is fellas because, you know, they don't, they havent figured that the women are smarter right now than the men, so, you know, its gonna take them about another 150 yearsbut the Persians are great negotiators, the Iranians are great negotiators, so, and they, they just killed, they just killed us.

But is that a speech he had time to write out and deliver? Or was he responding to a question on the spot? Or was he just winging it?

Obviously if he wrote out that speech and thought it was good, that's one thing...but being able to get up in front of thousands/millions of people (including in front of cameras on live TV) and come up with answers on the spot and deliver them smoothly is a skill. Yes, it's a skill that most politicians have, and a skill that would serve Trump well to develop. But using that as a sign of his overall intelligence I think is a bit cheap.

Just my opinion!

He said that in a speech. Even if someone asked a question, that answer is more than a lack of skill with speech. That is a rambling nothing that makes no point.

So yeah, I think he's stupid. Maybe not twenty years ago, but the image he presents now is stupid. If he's faking it for whatever reason, that doesn't matter. If you act stupid, people are going to think you are stupid.
