Have you heard the one about the guy who walks into a bar and comes out with a new kidney?

It happened almost that quickly for Don Thomas, a regular customer at the Hooters restaurant in Roswell, Georgia. He was talking to a new waitress, Marianna Villareal, when he happened to mention hed lost both his kidneys to cancer.

Villareal, 22, recently lost her grandmother to kidney disease, and even though she didnt know the 72-year-old outside of work, she didnt hesitate to offer him one of her kidneys.

She says she wasnt able to do anything for her grandmother, but knew the transplant would be worth it if Thomas got to live a longer, happier life because of it.

I applaud her for her generosity, but I question whether a healthy young person at 22 should be giving up a kidney to someone in their 70s when there's likely a long waitlist for transplants filled with other young, healthy individuals with many years ahead of them.

Good on her, though.

It makes perfect sense if you consider her emotional state. She had just lost her grandmother to kidney disease, and here comes someone probably the same age also dying from a kidney problem. She probably feels like she could have saved her family and sees this as a sort of personal penance for not doing the same before.

Not really, it's wasted on some old prick whose body is failing them. A younger person who would make greater use of the kidney would be a more suitable recipient of a transplant.

^ I think your logic of "It's a waste of time to help older people" is silly.

You just seem like an angry man

It's not a waste of time, but young people should have priority in these things.

Still a very nice story though, and I get why she wanted to do this. It's not like she randomly decided to donate a kidney, it was for a specific reason.
