tell me again how we need to "establish axioms"

we need to agree on certain basic ethical statements before we can follow those statements to their conclusion

why cant you just tell me which system of ethics you used to deem it unethical to use animals for food

because I haven't quantified my entire system of ethics, and ethics doesn't always have hard borders, it can be fuzzy. but there are certain things I hold true, for example

human life has value for its consciousness, amoeba life does not (there are fuzzy cases in the middle)
killing animals for no reason is wrong, killing them for survival is not wrong (there are fuzzy cases in the middle)

Ethics is naturally fuzzy. what I tend to conclude with eating meat though is that is falls firmly on the not fuzzy side of the scale. First world meat consumption is generally solely for pleasure, this places it closer to the "no reason" side than the "survival" side. Cows and pigs are mammals, which puts them much more into the valuable side than the non-valuable.

Do you value your tasting pleasure more than the life of high level mammals? that's a question you need to answer for yourself, but it can and should be informed by knowledge of high level non-primate mammal similarity to us

well, most animals don't really comprehend what's going on. they're just motor functions.

Lol, people still believe this.

The problem here is that you're never going to get this guy to even accept the notion that non-human animals even can suffer. He literally (like most people, particularly religious people, sadly) believes that animals are organic robots that don't even experience the world subjectively. Exactly as conscious as a Rube Goldberg machine. What these people fail to realize is that pain and misery is such a low-level mental process that you just don't need anywhere near human-level intelligence to experience it fully. And why would you? The purpose of those things is to avoid harmful situations. It's not a side effect of "higher consciousness". You wouldn't argue that a baby or a small child can't suffer pain or sadness like an adult can, would you? Yet a 2-year-old is only about as smart as a dog, so why can't a dog experience sadness or pain? It just reeks of special pleading and a mystical understanding of the human experience

I won't deny they taste good but I feel like a lot of people say this as a psychological way of doubling down in the face of cognitive dissonance
