Yeah, there's a little mechanism on the cart that unhooks it from the other carts when you put a quarter in it, and then releases the quarter when you hook it back up to the other carts. It allows the store to get away with not needing any cart fetchers since people have to take the carts back themselves if they want their quarter back.

it also helps make the carts not immediately shit, since they aren't getting left in the parking lot, being banged into poles or hit by cars and shit

You get it back at the end.

The point is so they can keep costs low by not having a cart pusher because people are far more willing to put them back to get their 25 cents.

You get it back when you hook the cart back up. They probably do it to prevent theft. As if a cart isn't worth a quarter.

Or what tc said about the cart pushers that also seems like a good reason.

Abandoned shopping carts is a real epidemic. There is a book I own about it. The quarter lock and chain keeps them safe.

I haven't seen the quarter lock in ages. Are people really too lazy to put the cart back? Most stores have a parking space designated for a stack of carts

That's empty surrounded by a little lot littered with carts! Yeah people are extremely lazy here at least.

I shopped at Aldi for the first time ever about a month ago. I didn't know what to do about the cart corral or how to get the shopping cart off the chain and I didn't bring any bags. Inside, some employees were unloading goods from mass transit cardboard totes and people were scrounging for these to carry their groceries in. I left Aldi with an awkward arm load of groceries stacked on top of a case of beer and I'm pretty sure at no point did I successfully look like anything other than a first time Aldi n00b. I am pretty sure at least 3 people saw me disgracefully walking away from the shopping cart corral and they were too embarrassed for me to say anything.

Meh. Somebody had to pay for them. Stuff isn't free. And it would take 10 bags of grocery to even out you a whole dollar...on what would likely be a $200+ bill to fill that many bags. But I guess I can see people thinking they're above paying for things other places give for free. I think it's too encourage people bringing their own reusable bags, in all honesty. Which is a good thing.

Why pay for a bag when I can use a box that they literally leave in a cart in the middle of the floor for people to take (usually), and then just recycle the box when I'm done?

It's a win / win really.

In my area plastic bags were outlawed a few years ago. To get a paper bag is 10 cents each. We have our own reusable ones. Like 10 for $12. We get such weird looks on the road when we bring our own bags in. Lol

Yeah and I was against that law too. Plastic bags are perfect for cleaning out a litter box.

yeah I got pissed sitting in the parking lot of a store waiting once, saw two women approach the same vehicle each with a cart (they where with each other apparently) one was maybe 40s the other looked to be in her 70s. the 70 some year old woman pushed her cart to the corral, and walked back to her car on a cane, the younger woman just shoved it between the parking bumper thing and the handicap parking sign.
