Like, I thought it would end up decent, even if Family Guy humor isn't my thing, but I bothered to start watching this episode tonight.

It's not funny. Like, there's more drama than humor in this, by far. But the worst part is that the drama is really, really bad. It's derivative of any Star Trek episode ever, except worse in every way. What a bad, bad show.

And yet somehow it's better than the new star trek.

My feelings exactly.

And the okayish thing it is is more like its chasing the vapors of grim social commentary shows like TWD than Trek.

I definitely agree about the badness of the first couple, but the third was pretty darn entertaining. Definitely different, but eh.

from what i understand it's a better star trek than discovery

I've only seen the first episode of Discovery and I can probably buy that. This first episode makes no sense. This main character makes no sense

Michael: We gotta kill all the klingons first

Literally every character: That seems like a bad idea. Are you sure this isn't just you being mad about klingons killing your family or whatever?

Michael: Of course not. I 'm completely logical. I'm practically a Vulcan or something. NOW KILL ALL THE KLINGONS OR ILL KILL YOU

I'd actually agree with this. The third episode of Discovery was probably better than most of the Orville episodes in overall quality, but it really didn't feel like Star Trek. Orville, whatever you think of the quality, screams Star Trek at every turn, and that's what I like about it. I'm not gonna sit here and say it's a great show, but I wanted something campy like the original Star Trek and that's exactly what it is, so I'm entertained by it.

like on Star Trek

I thought the first two episodes were... okay. The issue was that I thought everything basically went along like I expected it to like it didn't take me long to figure out what was going to happen etc. Yeah, some of it is because I know where in the timeline about it takes place and some star trek lore.

The third episode though added a lot more intrigue even if some of the acting seems a bit stilted.

On a serious note, STD feels nothing like Star Trek. Even the lighting doesn't feel like Star Trek, and I'm not someone who gets hung up on technical things like that.

As I understand it, STDs planning and writing had a different approach than all the other star treks which is why it might deviate so much from the original formula.

I enjoyed Star Trek. My parents enjoyed The Orville. I go visit them on Mondays, and we watch a lot of TV they wouldn't watch otherwise and we've compromised on watching both.

This is what my parents watch in order of how much they like it:

-Lucifer (Everyone's favorite)
-Flash (Mom likes Harrison Wells and Joe, Dad likes Harrison Wells and Barry)
-Curb Your Enthusiasm (Dad hates, Mom loves, but Dad quotes it all the time, so I think he just says he hates it)
-Star Trek: Discovery (Everyone enjoys it)
-Legends of Tomorrow (Dad loves Heatwave, Mom likes the Atom ["he's cute"])
-Arrow (Mom is so bored with it but Dad enjoys it)
-The Orville (I dislike it, Mom sleeps through it but says she likes it, Dad likes it, reminds him of "old Star Trek")
-Designated Survivor (Not sure why we're watching this)

On hiatus: American Crime Story, The Good Fight

My parents would likely watching nothing if I didn't interject myself in their lives. But they have a capacity to surprise me; my Mom actually loved South Park. Remember that my mom is a music director at a church, so it's kind of amazing at the range of what she'll watch. My dad just started Game of Thrones this summer and we sneak in an episode here or there if my mom makes a dinner.

Anyways, that's my traditional Monday; I don't get to see my parents too often otherwise.

I was already pretty down on Discovery after the first 2 episodes and then it completely lost me when they introduced the fact that the Federation apparently has forced labor prison camps for criminals

god we need some sort of positive vision of the future right now and Discovery is so painfully cynical

I don't really mind them having a totally different formula, but it just feels like it's aping the storytelling style of something like GoT except with one viewpoint character. It's also weird that they went out of their way to specify that this takes place in the original timeline with all of the original shows and then just ignored continuity in every way.

Yes Michaels character is utterly stupid and the whole world seems shaped to justify her stupidity which is a strange decision that reminds me of...well Rick from TWD who ends up being the arbiter of morality sinply because he ends up being right more often than not which is a pretty twisted version of the Star Trek mission statement to say the least.

There was some horrible cowboy movie I saw that Seth guy in and Family Guy has always annoyed me... however perhaps I should give that Orville show a chance.

I like the new Star Trek but don't love it so far. I really loved Michelle Yeoh's character but unfortunately she died very early on.

I liked the first two episodes better than the monster-of-the-week feel of the third. It's different though that's for sure.
