Well UK is part of Europe too but as a UK person, I only understand English. But I play games and meet gamers from Germany and Netherlands etc. They type in perfect English. Like the grammar is perfect too.

Its just awesome to be able to understand more than one language.

I tried to learn German and French myself but I immediately got intimidated at how difficult they look.

Do countries like Germany and switzerland use English often? Because I heard that if you dont use a secondary language often enough you forget it before you become fluent with it.

A typical brits idea of cultural enrichment is taking a Ryanair flight to Spain and sitting on a beach in a Manchester United jersey sipping a San Miguel.

I know 3 languages, one my mother tongue, one is the national language and the last is English

Honestly, I should learn more languages, on a global scale, basically I know only one

But yeah, mainland Europeans have it good

I'm Spanish, living in France for the past 9 years.

The people you interact with are those who speak English best. Basically if you were a gamer in the 90s in mainland Europe either you learnt English or you were screwed.

So yeah, people do learn English but don't expect a random middle-aged person in the street to speak it fluently.

Tbf German isn't nearly as hard as it might seem. It and English are both part of the same language group, and aside from cases and grammatical gender (the difficulty of both is overrated too tbh) it's simpler in a lot of ways.

Most people under like 40 in Germany speak English well, especially if they were born in West Germany before reunification.

But yeah America has this problem as well. All my Danish cousins and my close German friend learned English starting at like 6 and a 3rd language a few years later.
