I'm a government worker, and they've introduced a scheme to allow employees to donate $1 a week from their paychecks to people in disadvantaged countries to help build wells and schools and stuff.

Humanitarian workers gave me a form on Thursday and told me to think about it. It is a tax deductible donation. Should I go through with it?

as much as i'd love to help people in need i've always been suspicious of charity groups, and not only them the government whom the money is handed to help the people in need. how much is donated versus how much the people actually get?

$1/week is $52/year. Do you *really* need a tax deduction on that? >_>

Otherwise just investigate whatever group is doing the giving, though.

its worth it to some people I suppose, I had a boss who would pick up receipts he found on the ground to see if there was anything on them he could claim for a tax deduction.

Agreed. I feel if a country actually wants to support a humanitarian issue, it should plan out a long-term, sustainable method to cure the issue permanently and all tax deductable charity donations should go to fill the account for executing the plan.

It's idiotic and wasteful to throw money at idealistic but powerless well-wishers and corrupt money-grabbers to solve problems. If governments want to look like they care about these problems they should be forced to make sure these problems are actually properly dealt with.

I feel that charities should only be exist to raise awareness to governments and put countries with shared interests in touch. They shouldn't be trusted to handle money.
