2016 was a pretty shitty year, not only at personal levels but even other random users say 2016 was a pretty shitty year. 2017 has been a pretty average/normal year, at least till now.

in my experience election years always tend to be shitty. elections seem to bring out the worst in people.

Could very well be true. Another reason I remembered was that a lot of liked celebrities also died. I mean famous people die here and there but I think 2016 was worse than other years in that regard.
