SNES version has bad script
GBA version is buggy
PSP version has godawful, ugly, vomit inducing sprites
DS version is slow and has a lot of gameplay changes that people didn't like (i personally loved them)

if you can get over the sprites play PSP

if you don't mind the gameplay changes play DS (steam)

there are no other answers

DS or Steam, they are the same.

People are gonna recommend PSP cause it has The After Years, but The After Years is garbage. It's quite literally the same game, with characters even comenting on how similar it all is.

The DS version made drastic changes, making it feel a bit more tactical and making you feel more involved in your decisions in battle.

The DS version was my favorite. It added the concept of Augments to the game. Which added an element of creative customization to your team.

Augments were key items that let characters learn special commands that were otherwise unique to individual characters.

For example, you could do something like teach Cecil the Kick and Counter commands from Yang. Move Kick to the first slot of the command menu. Then, have him Cover. This would result in him intercepting physical attacks enemies would make against other party members, then counter with Kick, which attacks all enemies instead of one.

Or you could give Kain the Darkness command that was unique to Cecil's Dark Knight class. It would boost damage output, but cause some damage when you attack. You have Kain activate Darkness and use Jump to deal big damage in a single attack.

DS/iOS

I suggest iOS because it also has The After Years which is a sequel in the same style. Voice acting is great and its probably the hardest of the old school FF games.
