its not the racists saying people should tolerate them. its the people who think they are any better than the racists when they themselves are just intolerant bigots.

Except they are better, because they hate someone for what the person practices, while the racist hates people based on things they can't control. You can't piss all over social contract and then try and hide behind said social contract.

I'm not sure why this is even a debate.

I consider myself to be left leaning, and while I don't like what racists say, it is their constitutional right to say it. Just as it is my constitutional right to say that racism is not something that I agree with. I don't believe that violence is the answer, nor is shouting, screeching on message boards, or banning free speech.

People are going to believe what they want to believe. To challenge that belief only causes them to double down on it. Essentially, the Alt-right and Antifa, etc. are fighting fire with fire, which only spreads fire.

I'm going to use the "both sides" argument, in that there are terrible people on "both sides". There are people on "both sides" that only seek to control others. "Both sides" need to sit down and talk about it like adults without screaming and throwing shit like feral chimpanzees, or "both sides" need to shut up.
