because kids loved scrappy
and kids were the target audience

now most adults hate him with a passion
but he was a hit with the audience the studio wanted.

remember the live action movie? they had sarah michelle geller base her daphne on buffy because they said daphne didnt really have a personality to go with.

now that may be true for the original series
but it became clear they didnt do enough research into the franchise.
because once fred and velma left the team and it was just daphne, shaggy, scooby and scrappy she started to become more like the groups leader which continued to 13 ghosts of scooby doo.

of course this is often forgotten and daphne's major thing now a days is that every new writer tries to put their own personal spin on her making her the most inconsistent character in the franchise
she will either be the best part of any new scooby doo show or the worst part

Scrappy I'm okay with. Scooby-Dum was just awful.

Yeah scrappy wasn't nearly as bad as tvtropes seems to make him, dedicating an entire trope on "the scrappy"

Now scooby dum on the other hand, that was a character I hated even as a kid.

The internet has an amazing talent for making minor annoyances seem like world-ending problems.

It's not just the internet. Even before tvtropes existed, the 2002 abomination of a live action scooby doo movie is what really made scrappy seem like the awful thing he is now associated with.

Shame too because I feel like they perfectly cast Shaggy and (to a smaller extent) Fred. Matthew Lillard was born to play Shaggy, I mean all I see is Shaggy in that 1996 movie Scream.

At it's one of the pettiest moments in the history of cinema. If Scooby Doo had been a good movie, that scene would have been enough to ruin it for me.

Growing up though, I always hated Scrappy. He just seemed so unnecessary. The only time he was tolerable was in 13 Ghosts.
