It's really not. Odyssey may be a return to a different style of 3D Mario than the trend started with the Galaxies and finished with 3DL/W, but that doesn't make 3DW any less of a main series Mario game. Side Mario games are things like Mario Kart, Mario vs. DK, Mario & Luigi, and other games that deviate heavily from the standard genre.

That said, expecting 3DW-level co-op here is pretty unreasonable. 3DW's co-op is a function of it being purely a platformer, with little exploration, which is the same reason it works so well in the NSMB games. Odyssey is much, much more exploration-focused, and you don't really want to co-op that unless it's split-screen or online (and even then, having somebody else run around and find stuff would take away from my own exploration).
