Can't think of a time when I have been really into the genre since I was a kid. Back then I could get into the story and so on, but these days they just seem so stupid for the most part, and so time consuming. I like to play games that are fun in short bursts and these always seem to want you to be dedicating your entire day to them. Totally moved on a long time ago.

yeah, same, but I feel like that is definitely a time constraint thing

like I started playing Vay for the Sega CD a few weeks ago after work and I played for maybe 2 hours... but it was mostly grinding and cut scenes. By the time I had gotten through the first dungeon/cave, I had to go take care of things like laundry, dinner, cleaning etc and every time I think about picking it up again I just think about that. Will I be able to progress to the next real event? What if I forget wtf I'm supposed to be doing between game sessions? What's the point if I only grind today?

whereas I can play Windjammers or some fighting game and the experience won't be different whether I play for 10 minutes or 10 hours

I am exactly the same lol. I grew up playing video games and still love having video games, but it seems like these days my collection is centered around games that I know I can enjoy in short bursts, and games like JRPG's have been heavily sidelined by me. Every time I try to get into them I just seem to get bored with that feeling of grinding away, and the dialogue that I used to enjoy as a kid now feels so corny and contrived. It feels like trying to watch the kind of cartoons you used to enjoy as a kid when you have grown up and moved on in a sense, and the time dedication needed for playing them just doesn't do it for me anymore, I hate it when a game wants me to sit down all day to play it.

These days I seem to be really into arcade style games when it comes to my classic gaming, I have been loving the ACA and neo-geo games lately for that reason and I really enjoy playing old shoot-em-ups and the occasional Mario game and so on, those games are perfect for how I like to play games these days.

As far as modern games go, it seems like racing games and sports games have been my main go-to. I still try to stay into other genres I used to love, but I notice myself spending most of my time playing those kind of games when it comes to modern gaming. So many genres were better than they are now, but sports and racing still seems to get better. Action games are once in a while cool, but I don't gravitate to them as much as I used to.

I agree completely.

I only play games that I can get a food 15min to 30min session in at a time. I can't play games for hours on end like I use to and I'm 27.

I have a career, a house, and a wife.

I still play tons of video games. RPGS of all types being my favorite genre.

I have noticed I don't have the patience I used to have though.

It's not all about time since I can play Forza or NBA 2K for hours, but there is just something about the entire experience of playing a JRPG these days... it feels like trying to watch the kind of anime I might have enjoyed as a kid. It might have seemed cool back then but these days it just feels kinda stupid. Once in a while there is something that ages well but most of the new stuff isn't up to that caliber.

Yeah, with me actually growing up I have less patience with some game and dont like investing so much time into RPGs as much anymore because of how big of a time vampire they can be. Its why I've been playing shmups more and more lately. Most can be cleared in 20-30 minutes and have very visible progression as far as demonstrating player skill.

Yeah exactly. It's why I love the old arcade games, great skill challenges that can be played in short bursts.

I have found that beyond the BEST of the best (Persona 5), I just don't have the time to sit down and play a JRPG.

However, I am going through Grandia on my VITA... and putting in maybe 20 minutes a day does eventually get me through the game, and taking it all in like that is fine too.

Yeah the 360 is a treasure mine for shoot-em-ups for some reason. I don't know what it is but that console had some crazy good support for them. I still have quite a few obscure Japanese imports that I always intended to buy.

fwiw if you wanna save some cash you can just make a JP XBL account, download them, and they will work just fine as long as they are region free downloads (muchi muchi pork download is only like 20-30 bucks, significantly cheaper than a physical copy of it)

as for why the 360 was shmup haven, sony practically didnt want arcade games on the ps3, basically told cave, moss etc to fuck off

@ManSpread that's crazy never knew about that! How hard is it to create a Japanese Xbox account? The crazy import fees are why I never got some games.

Didn't know Sony was so anti-arcade back then. Kinda crazy considering how they are the platform for arcade games these days.

Persona 5 is the only rpg I've beat in like 5 years. Witcher 3 aside, rpgs today are too full of bs to worth putting in the time to get to the good stuff. If the game is 50 hours, I don't want to spend 40 of those hours navigating a menu and walking/backtracking to various locations.

Yeah it's why I only seemed to enjoy Diablo 3 and Skyrim when it comes to modern RPG's. They just let you do whatever you want, more of an open world than a story. Games like Persona 5 are just offputting to me these days. I mean I can appreciate all the effort that goes into it but the entire experience just isn't for me.
