They should. We mourn more for cops than we do our soldiers. Why is that? It has nothing to do with the fact that police exist to keep the populace in check and villifying their murderer above an average crime works to maintain that.

I think that at least it should be treated as a normal kill if the killer didn't know it was a cop, as opposed to killing him because he was a cop.
Of course, this can only happen when out of uniform.

A police officer is just another occupation with a better salary. Sure they might get weapons pulled on them, but so do the clerks at dollar general.

Besides the there putting themselves between the good guys and bad guys and protecting people the reason murder and assault of cops are treated differently is as an almost protection for cops.

Make people think twice about attacking them. Cop stops you and you're gonna go away for 3 years. Attack the cop and it's 10 years kill the cop and you'll be killed.

I don't know if it's effective in that ways but I think that's part.

Police are typically risking their lives whenever they respond to a call. They need the extra protection as a disincentive for criminals to attack or kill them.

It isn't a hate crime until their ethnic background or sexual orientation is proven to be the motive for the attack, like the white guy that was assaulted by the 4 black teens.
