It's not even that. It is actually the case that pulling this card when looking back to, oh I don't know, January 2009 to January 2017 is utterly nonsensical.

And the people (I'm feeling generous today) that make up the desired audience will eat it up and won't ever balk when you bring up that magical period before it was suddenly wrong to criticize the president.

So the President should be immune from criticism about foreign policy during wartime? That's a pretty damn dangerous precedent that would definitely give presidents some terrible incentives. It's also especially rich because Breitbart attacked Obama daily despite having kids in the field. Trump is also a strange person to go to bat for considering his comments on the military and veterans.

This guy is such a transparently evil cynic and an example of everything wrong with modern politics.

A lot of people in these circles believe it to be treason to criticize the President and have since Reagan, except they conveniently ignore Obama and Clinton. You see it too in reaction to players kneeling during the anthem. The flag and the song are not sole property of the troops; we are a nation and not just a military. But nevertheless people try to conflate the two, and it's worth thinking about why.

I've still never gotten a satisfactory answer on why we necessarily play the National Anthem during a sporting event or why or why not in other places, or how not standing for the national is directly disrespectful towards our military.

It's just bureaucrats who vicariously use others (in this case, US soldiers) as a political bludgeon.

As best I can understand, the tradition began during WWII and just didn't stop.

Might be interesting to note that while US leagues kept playing during WWII, European leagues had to stop given the larger impact the war had on those countries. It's possible that results in the difference on this subject.

I'd say it has more to do with the fact the US seems to be the only country that is so blindly patriotic. Add in our love affair with capitalism and of course businesses are going to take advantage of that whenever they can.
