ThePieReborn posted...Does he really wanna be pulling that card? Or do people just in general have the memory of goldfish? It's not even that. It is actually the case that pulling this card when looking back to, oh I don't know, January 2009 to January 2017 is utterly nonsensical. My point is he doesn't care as long as he can twist a situation into something that can better push his Nazi agenda. He doesn't care if he's a hypocrite, he doesn't care who he has to exploit, he simply doesn't care. All that matters to him is the Nazi agenda.

So the President should be immune from criticism about foreign policy during wartime? That's a pretty damn dangerous precedent that would definitely give presidents some terrible incentives. It's also especially rich because Breitbart attacked Obama daily despite having kids in the field. Trump is also a strange person to go to bat for considering his comments on the military and veterans.

If anything it's more disturbing of all to imply we should not criticize terrible leadership when soldiers lives are on the line...
That's like an example of one of the biggest times you SHOULD criticize leadership. We lost $7 trillion, 7,000 lives and got a million soldiers injured for no gain because people didn't have the balls to criticize Bush and Obama over Iraq and Afghanistan. Beyond the obvious part of shielding U.S. leadership from criticism, there's a subtle and cynical aspect of this line of thinking which seeks to equate the U.S. as a country with the U.S. military. You see it too in reaction to players kneeling during the anthem. The flag and the song are not sole property of the troops; we are a nation and not just a military. But nevertheless people try to conflate the two, and it's worth thinking about why.

I've still never gotten a satisfactory answer on why we necessarily play the National Anthem during a sporting event or why or why not in other places, or how not standing for the national is directly disrespectful towards our military. As best I can understand, the tradition began during WWII and just didn't stop. Might be interesting to note that while US leagues kept playing during WWII, European leagues had to stop given the larger impact the war had on those countries.
