I have asperger's and I don't care at all. I understand that most people that use it aren't against people with mental disabilities in any way. I'm not going to be offended by one word when there are so many far worse things going on in the world right now.

pretty much. It's super surprising when I hear it too. Sometimes i think that word is sort of a product of the past, because I heard it way more 15 years ago, but then I think it's just because I moved out of my dumb small town and made smart and sophisticated friends, because it's always some ugly trashy fat chick who busts it out when I in a bad part of town.

We stopped doing this over race or orientation because we realized the negative connotation, so now let's stop doing it with the mentally ill/challenged. We're just reinforcing the negatives those kinds of people feel. "Haha you're synonymous with stupid." You can say people need thicker skin, but that only really works for adults.

Using the noun is kind of in poor taste, but the adjective has existed LONG before it was used to describe any group of people and I don't see any issue with using it to describe something the same way people call things "stupid".

I struggle with that one, admittedly. I guess its because the people it applies to now (stupid people) are what are associated with it, but the people who it should offend (actual people with disabilities) are not ever called that properly, and the word really wouldn't apply to them at all.
