Half of Netflix's recent additions are Bollywood movies that have plots that sound like they came from a porno.

Indian cinema certainly has its issues. And, I should note, there are a surprising number of raunchy or softcore scenes which apparently show up in Indian movies -- or, at least, that's the impression I have from the glut of such stuff uploaded to Youtube.

And I watch a good amount of foreign horror, some of which is in English (such as From the Dark, a great Irish vampire movie) and some of which is subbed.

Netflix gets most releases from Strand Releasing and Kino Lorber a few months after they play in theaters, which is good because those two distributors never release their movies where I live so its generally the earliest chance I get to see them.

Don't watch any Bollywood, don't care for it.

The mainstream stuff is absolute garbage in Bollywood. Like, literally no mainstream movies are worth watching. Indie's the way to go, where prominent actors like Nawazuddin Siddique were found. And you're totally right about softcore/raunchy stuff in bollywood. The average Indian male is way too sexually frustrated compared to western/developed countries. Like a good chunk of population loses their virginity when they get married.

While I'm sure that Indians have premarital sex and I'm not sure how well you can tie pornographic content to sexual frustration, the country is known for its abysmally poor treatment of women between major issues with groping to high-profile gangbang-rape which tragically left a woman dead because, after raping her, the drunken morons decided to use an iron rod on her.

Women are discriminated and fairly oppressed for the most part. The poor people often think its useless to spend money on their daughters for education, as eventually she'll get married and will be living with some other guy, while the son is supposed to take care of their parents when they're old. But on to the point, its true, people in India aren't particularly open about sex as compared to most developed countries I guess. Girls are often taught to stay away from the guys and many people often don't pick/don't care who they'll marry, they let their parents decide. I can say more but I'm feeling lazy at the moment its 2am

And that incident was horrible. Most rape happens in the northern states. Delhi has some of the worst stories you'll ever hear.

That's not really a sexual awareness or sexual openness issue, just a gender equality issue. Sexual promiscuity doesn't really correlate to gender equality. Granted, even as more women start to achieve economic equality in India, a lot of the deep-seated cultural attitudes towards women remain.
