She added that the earliest example of the style dates to 11th to early 12th century Muslim architectureall dating to at least 100 years after the Viking textile found in Birka. She also noted that Larssons drawing of the word Allah in Kufic script wasnt even common until the 15th century.

In other words, Larsson and her teams findings are the result of pareidoliathey saw Arabic patterns where there werent any.

Mulders debunking of Larsson extended to the rest of the textile, as well. She pointed out that Larssons claims are based on supposition, and not proof.

The professor also stated that the only reason the story went viral was because of contemporary politics. The story, she says, struck a nerve because it could serve as a rebuttal to white supremacists who long for the glory days of the crusades.

I don't personally care about this either way

but it's been funny watching a very particular group of people getting upset at the possibility of some white vikings possibly being islamic

I agree with her last point to an extent but i wouldn't call this debunked. This is how history works, there would be a debate and a consensus will be formed.

Yeah, I mean cursory research shows that Vikings and Muslims did have contact with each other.

Muslims wrote about the Rus' people; there's been Islamic coinage found in Scandinavia; Muslims also documented Barbary pirates raiding Scandinavia for slaves.

I mean, the Vikings had far more contact with Christians in Europe. The "Viking" sword is based off Frankish design (Christian).

My statement was pointing out that this discovery isn't really set as has been said.

Even the professor who rebutted this said: Vikings had rich contact with the Arab world. This textile? No, she began, noting that the textile has no Arabic at all but the story has gone viral thanks to news outlets like the Times and BBC.
