It worked fine until some of them started to go crazy and kill people, so they had to create more powerful robots to battle the first generation of crazy robots. After this, Zero is discovered in a ruin, he lost his memories and joins the Maverick Hunter. X is a lowranked Maverick Hunter at the start of the first game while Zero is of a higher rank.
