I'm 'Murican and never really cared for the band but my girlfriend's mother who's from Canada loved them.
Sad that he died so young.

Looked at vids of his last Toronto show. I just couldn't handle it. All of Canada lost a great poet today. You were ahead by WAY more than a century.

For sure, man. At least it's comforting that he was able to go out on his own terms. They did the final tour, the movie and then he went surrounded by family and loved ones. It sucks that he was so young but you can't really ask for anything better than that (death wise).

Look at this man. He's playing in Air Canada Centre; the Hip were the first band ever booked for the venue. They got their big break at the Horseshoe Tavern in Toronto in the 80s.

This band raised and nurtured a generation. Listen to those screams. He doesn't want to die. But, accepts it, and parties on until the end. If only we all had that kind of courage.

Anyone who is Canadian is sad for losing such an icon. I think Prime Minister Trudeau said it best:

Gord was my friend, but he was everyones friend our buddy Gord, who loved this country with everything he had. And not just with a nebulous Oh, I love Canada way, he loved every hidden corner, every story, every aspect of this country that he celebrated his whole life.

For almost five decades, Gord Downie uncovered and told the stories of Canada. He was the frontman of one of Canadas most iconic bands, a rock star, artist, and poet whose evocative lyrics came to define a country.

The Tragically Hips music invited us to explore places we had never been from Mistaken Point to Churchill and helped us understand each other, while capturing the complexity and vastness of the place we call home.

Gords command of language was profound. He painted landscapes with his words, elevating Canadian geography, historical figures, and myths. When he spoke, he gave us goosebumps and made us proud to be Canadian. Our identity and culture are richer because of his music, which was always raw and honest like Gord himself.

Bump, more people need to know of Gord and the Tragically Hip.

Highly recommend their Woodstock 99 concert, and the song New Orleans Is Sinking.

I've got a recording of their final concert that they had in Kingston, that they ended up playing live on CBC. Gord Downie was a cultural icon, and it's a shame he left us so young.
