It's very fun, and at times very difficult.

Like Mario 64 it has 120 stars, or in the case of this game Shine Sprites. There are 7 areas of Isle Delfino for you to explore, along with various areas around the main Delfino Plaza hub, and finally Corona Mountain. Many sprites are found while some are purchased using blue coins you collect.

It's the variety.

Sunshine has more shines per level but there's fewer levels. SM64 also had more level variety, barring a repeat of a snow level.

its a good game but its haters are very vocal. just ignore them because they dont really deserve an opinion

I wouldn't say Sunshine is lacking variety at all, honestly. It's more just lacking polish. Arbitrary-as-hell blue coins (the worst being from arbitrary objects that only give blue coins when sprayed in certain episodes), the whole game being completely broken over and over by the simple fact that the hover nozzle lets you turn around after a wall jump (so you can scale everything with spin jump or u-turn jump, wall jump, hover and skip huge portions of the levels), Yoshi being in the game as more of a really awkward key than a useful powerup, a fair amount of filler shines, etc.

Movement on the ground feels absolutely sick in that game, though, with all the diving and sliding.

No it is not required.

It's not required to clean up sludge, but on rare occasions there will be M's for blue coins hidden underneath. There are only a couple instances in the game of this, but in those cases, the M's aren't there in episodes where there is no goop.

sunshine is a rare game that gets vastly worse when you try to 100% it, like gex 3

I love Mario but recall sunshine not pulling me in at all

Sunshine wasn't bad but it has never been a Mario classic. It's kinda like Yoshi's Island, and the US version of Mario Bros 2, an odd cult favorite that most people weren't a fan of.

theres hidden goodies in sludge a lot of time. sometimes you can clear sludge in such a way that the goodie is hidden inside a speck of sludge (sometimes even shine sprites, buildings, etc)

but other than finding those goodies, sludge is irrelevant
