V may have been a better game if they didn't use the job system in it. Due to that, it ran into the same problem as FF3. Forgettable characters(mins one that's not even playable. Most people think he started in FF8 anyway.), bland world and story.

The job system is the only reason I liked that game. Everything is very bland as you say. Laughable for people to think it's better than 6.

The gameplay in V is leagues better than VI, it's irrefutable. FFVI has a goofy story flow. "ayyy we found Terra; let's sing opera now." You could take Ultros out of the story entirely and it isn't any different.

I say replace Gilgamesh with Ultros in ffv for more squid action.

This is the game that killed my enthusiasm for Final Fantasy. Worst game in the series for me.

FFV and FFVI are imo the best games in the series.

7 will always be a contender for top, but that's simply due to nostalgia, because 8 > 7

I almost made this topic as well. I hadn't ever played FF4-6 until just a few months ago, so from someone who has no nostalgia attached to them I can say that FF5 is such a better game then either of the other two. This surprised me since FF6 came after, but it felt like such a one step forward, two steps back kind of situation. I could go on for a long time about the absurdly embarrassing faults FF6 has, but FF5 is just a really solid game. It could sure use more love, but unfortunately didn't release in the US during everyone's childhood, so oh well.

In terms of game play, I do have to give the edge to FFV. That version of the Job System is one of my favorites in the series. But FFVI has the goods for story and characters, IMO

I thought 6 was pretty bad vanilla. BTB's mod made the gameplay significantly better but nothing could really fix the second half of the game.

I think V was the weakest of the SNES titles. But all three are great games. 5 had a really annoying problem the other games didn't... "Hey neat, whats in that treasure chest? Oh, its Shinryu. Guess i'll just reset."

V's two biggest problems are the story's pacing and the villain being a cardboard cutout . . . when he's a demon-possessed tree.

VI's biggest issue is the balancing in combat. Some argue it's the direction that the story takes about halfway in, as it opens up a bit too much for some people, but it's honestly fine; there's a logic behind some of the places you go, when you go to them.

People keep praising the story in 6 like it's its biggest advantage, but I thought that only applied to the overarching story. I DO think the basic story being told is stellar and actually relatively unique. However, most of the smaller story points along the way were so bad, so stupid that not even saying "video game logic" could fix it.

Then there were the points where you could choose your party, which is great, but their solution to this story-wise was to make the scenes super generic and bland since they had no way of knowing what characters would be present. In the second half there were so many potentially touching scenes of meeting up with characters that just had no impact at all because of this.

Yeah, the story in 5 is pretty normal, but at least it didn't make me cringe/face palm/whatever you wanna call it.
