also liked how the black dude didn't die right away. I thought they spoiled his death in the trailers, but they swapped him with Reynolds! Didn't see that coming

I don't remember any full blown hate, but I guess it got lukewarm reception overall. I would rate it better than the consensus. It probably got overshadowed by some other big movies out at the time. I think BatB was still making waves when this was released.

If it's the "twist" I think you're thinking of, that was only telegraphed in the final minutes of the film, so I'm not sure how that's worse than movies that give it away in the opening scenes.
