there's a difference between playing the game's objective and gobbling up useless little trinkets that have no effect on the game whatsoever

What if collecting the trinkets is an objective?

In the end, what's the point of games anyway? They're just entertainment. Collectables are just another element to the equation that some players find entertaining

Its busywork. The odd time you collect anything interesting, I get really excited. There were Spider-Man games with full comics to collect, about a dozen each, which was awesome.

What's the purpose of playing video games at all? Or collecting or doing anything that doesn't help you in some way?

On a related note, there are many people who buy and play games just to get trophies/achievements for them.

I actually agree to an extent that collectables just for the sake of collecting can be annoying, but it's not like they inherently are. It's definitely a silly thing to complain about, though. Isn't it better than having to collect a bunch of stuff to beat the game?

The Korok Seeds in BotW are a good example of how to do this right. They aren't necessary to collect to beat the game, but they still do something that helps you in the game. And they stop having a tangible effect after a certain point, but that's good - it means you can miss a lot of them but still get the full upgrades.

Because it makes the sheeple feel like a game is longer/has more content. Games that boast large quantities of collectables and side missions (which are rarely done correctly) but whose main story can be beaten in a few days of playing, are garbage.

There are very, very few games whose main stories can't be beaten within a few days of playing. A few days is a lot of play time; a game lasting longer than that is almost always a consequence of padding that main story somehow, and I'd much rather see a game be fleshed out with interesting side content than pad the main story like that just so they can say it's longer.

I agree. Just for the record, I didn't mean play time of a few days, but rather a few days of casual playing. There are also very few games that are actually good.

...Unless you're a completionist who tries to get all 900 for that 100%...and then get rewarded with literally a golden pile of shit. I think it could have been done better imo. But I understand your perspective.
