SMTIV seemed like a solid game that I couldn't get into because I'm pretty much done with handheld gaming.

So I don't really know anything about Persona/SMT other than the fact that they have some kind of relation to each other since some of the Persona games have SMT in their title.

First game of either series I played was P5, which I just finished and FUCKING LOVED.

So will I like SMT5? Should I be hyped for this?

Why not go back and play other games in both series and decide for yourself?

it's a little too early to tell. The Persona games and traditional SMT games have some similarities but differ wildly on their focus. If you're going into an SMT game thinking it's heavy on characters like the Persona games you might have a bad time.

Do you have a Wii U? Tokyo Mirage Sessions might be up your alley.

I don't really have time. It took me from release day until two days ago to finish Persona 5, for example. Just looking for a straight answer.

SMT is the core series while Persona was a spinoff that ended up becoming more popular than the core series itself

SMT games are darker and much more difficult than persona and let's focus on the characters and story and more on the gameplay and building a team of demons

The remake of shin Megami tensei strange journey is out on 3DS and January I would recommend checking that out

It's out in 3 days in Japan and early 2018 in NA. They added a new route, threw in some extra demons, and spruced stuff up a bit like with new artwork and voice acting.
