My mom's friend's grandson is turning five, and as the only person in their group of friends/family who knows anything about video games I've been asked to suggest a good console and a few games for a five year-old boy. The problem is that my knowledge of little kid games is limited to the early 90s, and I don't think he'd appreciate Super Empire Strikes Back.

SNES classic probably would actually be good though--no fuss over losing discs/carts, easy setup, and the kid's probably not old enough or aware of games enough yet to care about the fact that these are all 20+ year old games with "outdated" graphics
