First sentence of the article:
Women continue to outnumber men in nursing nationwide. Approximately nine percent of the professionally active nurse workforce in the U.S. is male, according to March 2015 data from The Kaiser Family Foundation.

The article is highlighting the UNDERREPRESENTATION of males in nursing careers and has nothing to do with race.

If you look at the data, you'll see that it's more specifically white women. Most people in those industries are women and most of them also happen to be white.

My favorite teacher was a black lady and my least favorite teacher was a black lady.

But yah, damn, not many black chicks are teachers. Our high school had a few but not many at all.

Interesting to see if theres any theory of why.

And shit, just another race baiting topic. Yall enjoy.

Then we should promote those careers more in grade school when kids are first deciding what careers they might be interested in. Unless there's also a huge hiring disparity based on application rates, then the representation may simply reflect that fewer minorities and males are interested in being teachers and pursue that as careers, at which point no action needs to be taken at all.

Students don't have a problem with teachers based on gender, but you'd be surprised how many parents are uncomfortable letting an adult man supervise their child for good chunk of the year. And again, it's exponentially more pronounced the younger the child.

The entire country? That's melodramatic. I don't think that's a conducive answer here.

The hiring process -- are you saying that hospitals are not hiring males and/or non-white nurses even when they have the degree needed?

He was commenting on how whenever women or minorities are 'underrepresented,' it's automatically systemic racism or sexism.

I mean, you really can say systemic racism and sexism is why white women dominated those fields. Those were jobs that people were fine with women doing when we still weren't cool with racial minorities. I wouldn't say it's a blatant issue now, but it can take a longtime for socially ingrained ideas to change. Nursing is still seen as a womanly field by a lot of people and a lot still aren't comfortable with men teaching children for whatever idiotic reason.

I'm a male registered nurse and CNA.

In the US, the lack of male nurses and aides is generally not a matter of rampant discrimination against male applicants. It's often quite the opposite. A lot of state and some private care facilities besides hospitals will prioritize hiring a quota of male caregivers whenever possible. Having both female and male care staff available at such facilities is a big benefit simply due to factors of gender. There's benefits to having at least 1-2 young male care staff on duty when the rest of the staff is predominantly female.

The catch is men are significantly less inclined to enter direct caregiving fields. It's not a particularly popular choice for men. To put it bluntly: there's bigger money elsewhere for less social requirements, training time, and professional restrictions.

Nursing is simply too aggravating of a job for pay that's overshadowed by higher paying male dominated fields. So most men pass on it.

The race thing is overblown when you consider about 70% of the US is white anyways, having 81% white nurses isnt horrifically skewed. The gender ratio is obviously much more out of whack numericallh
