I think the people who say "this all took place before the election" are being a little shortsighted.

If someone has dirt on you, or you owe them substantial money, then you are very easily compromised. "Hey, get Trump to do this, we'll make it go away."

In fact, there's already been circumstantial evidence of this, when the RNC's platform on Ukraine changed overnight to be far more favorable to Russia, literally the day after (I believe), Trump campaign officials met with Sergey Kislyak.

Not to mention that Manafort was able to run the campaign for free because he had all this illegal Russian money. That's a huge benefit that Trump received as a result of Manafort's crimes.

Didn't they also ignore it when they were told about Flynn while he was President?

Well, for a few weeks until enough of the story went public that it happened. And even then it seemed to be one of the more reluctant actions taken.

Yeah, his response was along these lines:

(from https://www.vox.com/2017/2/16/14640956/trump-press-conference-flynn-fired)

Trumps answer was very odd:

No, I fired him because of what he said to Mike Pence. He was doing his job and his counterparts, so it certainly would have been okay with me if he did it. I would have directed him to do it if I thought he wasnt doing it. I didnt direct him, but I wouldve directed him because thats his job. And it came out that way, and, in all fairness, I watched Dr. Charles Krauthammer the other night saying he was doing his job, and I agreed with him. And since then, Ive watched many other people say that. I didnt direct him, but I wouldve directed him if he didnt do it.

So according to Trump:

Trump did not direct Flynn to call Ambassador Sergey Kislyak and talk about sanctions, so there is no wrongdoing on Trumps part.
But there was also nothing wrong with Flynns decision to call Kislyak and talk about sanctions, so there is no wrongdoing on Flynns part.
Flynn got fired not due to underlying misconduct, but because he told Vice President Pence he hadnt discussed sanctions with Kislyak.
There are a bunch of different puzzling aspects to this.

First among them is the timing. Flynn wasnt fired when Trump was told that Flynn had lied to Pence. Nor was Flynn fired when Pence found out that Flynn had lied to Pence. Rather, Flynn was fired a few hours after the Washington Post told the public that Trump had been told weeks earlier that Flynn had lied to Pence.

So he would have kept him around forever if the public had not found out.

Bleh, just realizing how poorly I worded my original comment. What I was trying (unsuccessfully) to say was something like "I don't see anyone approaching this issue from the angle of 'Trump only won the election because of the Russians and I'm going to prove it.'"

I think most people on both sides of the political spectrum agree that the reason to pursue this is to figure out what influence Russia has had and what can be done to prevent that in the future.

Don't you still end up with usually (sometimes roughly) 50% on each side of the mean?

depends on how extreme the high and low values are. if there a lot of really really bad or really really good scores, it can skew the mean to one end or the other.

like, if you have 10 scores out of 10 and the results are 10, 10, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, your mean is 2.8 and 80% of your scores are below the mean.

I mean, I get that you can get a skewed mean in situations like that, but in something like ACT scores, the chances of that happening are pretty negligible. You're rarely going to see scores like "100, 100, 10 10 10 10 10 10 10 10 10" in academics.

He's not entirely wrong when it comes to this kind of situation. Worded it poorly, sure

The thing i take issue with is "that's how math works," implying a specific thing about the definition of "average" that is not correct, while criticizing a method of teaching mathematics. Whatever one's issues with common core, replacing it with identifiably incorrect things is not a particularly good solution.

Furthermore, i have a particular disdain for assumptions of normal distributions in academic scores.
