Broken tail lights and brake lights can be dangerous to other drivers and could get you pulled over and ticketed. The Huron Valley Democratic Socialists of America want to help.

The HVDSA is hosting "Gimme a Brake (Light)" from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 11, at St. Johns United Church of Christ, 801 S. Mechanic St.

Volunteers from the group will replace broken brake and tail lights for any Jackson-area resident free of charge, a press release says.

The purpose is to help reduce the opportunity for police stops that "disproportionately affect vulnerable populations," the release says.

People interested can set up an appointment by emailing [email protected]. However, an appointment is not needed.

The DSA is the largest socialist organization in the United States with chapters across the country. The group works to make reforms today that will weaken the power of corporations and increase the power of working people, the group's website says.

This follows a similar program in New Orleans

Lmao. If a cop wants to pull you over, they will. It's not possible to drive very far without breaking something in the traffic code.

Sounds fantastic!

As long as people arent being taxed or otherwise being forced to fund this, I think this is a fantastic charitable action and I hope they continue to do more charitable acts for people.

Is it that hard to change a tail light on most cars? For mine its two screws two fasteners and you unscrew and change the $4 bulbs.

Yeah, I don't know. I think my tail light burned out once in 10 years, and it cost something $2.39 to buy a bulb and fix it. Not sure how you can afford to drive a car at all if this expense is prohibitive for you.

Don't forget the $80 of labor that the mechanic charges you because you don't have a choice.

I have never seen a shop charge more than $10 total to do this.

Why would you even need a mechanic to do this? It takes literally two minutes. Here is a video of a guy showing anyone who might not know how to do it:

Lol, never been to a mechanic?

My last mechanic charged me a grand total of $1600 to not fix my car and wouldn't return it when they didn't fix it.

In fact, we ended up having to sell that car for scrap adter they tore it apart. The scrapper came to the mechanic's to get it.

All I know is what they told me. It started making a bad sound, so I took it in. I don't remember what they said. It was some jargon I couldn't understand. I remember the word "gasket" but I dunno what that is. I get it back and the next day it starts making the same sound again before cutting off and stranding me on the freeway. We tow it back to them, and they tell me the cam shaft broke. They tell us they'll give us a discount on labor since it looks like the sound thing didn't get fixed but they charge us $400 for a cam shaft. Then, apparently they didn't notice before (>_>) but apparently I need a new... timing belt, I think it was. So they tear the car into a million pieces and tell me I need a new engine.

Well a new engine for a '99 Corolla costs more than a '99 Corolla so we scrapped it.

You don't know?

Then what you actually did is pay them to find out you blew up your car, then you got pissed at them because they couldn't fix what you broke.

That car required a timing service - new timing belt, gears, and a check of the cam shafts and gears - at 120,000. You missed that regularly-scheduled maintenance procedure, and I'm willing to bet you ALSO missed a few oil changes (every 3,000 miles or so), transmission services (every 20,000 miles or so), and maybe a coolant flush (every 50,000 miles or so).

You fucked up your car, waited for it to literally tell you it's dying to take it in for repair, and are mad at the guy who literally can't fix the car for not fixing the car. I agree that it's shit that the mechanic didn't catch the problem the first time, but this whole thing is on you.

This is actually a very, VERY common problem throughout the world - people who don't know shit about cars beat the piss out of them, then get mad when they fuck it up and it can't get fixed.

He didn't charge you for the repair. He charged you for the work put into it, in an attempt to fix the car you blew up.

People too fucking lazy and dumb to fix a tail light deserve what they get. How about personal responsibility?

Maybe next this group can organize a community ass wiping as well. I'm sure those less fortunate are too busy struggling in this awful country to wipe their own ass.
