I'd say it has more with gaming becoming a more "mainstream" hobby, as well as the maturing of the medium into a storytelling platform overall. We truly have interactive experiences now, akin to movies and television, instead of half-baked stories tacked on to a game to give the player some semblance of motivation and plot. People become invested in the stories and characters now and look forward to sequels to continue their journey.
I think you'll see interest continue to rise for a number of years, as different demographics get keyed into the hobby. I'm sure there are a lot of factors, including population growth, industry changes, public perception changes, etc.

I honestly think population growth is the biggest factor though damn mass consumption.... just look at the 'mobile' gaming market ... Copied to Clipboard!
