It mainly refers to people getting sick from being out in the cold.

I hope you feel better. I'm coming down with something too. When I ran this morning it was raining and cold and I felt like I never warmed up.

Isn't it because the person often feels cold when they have a cold?

nope. it's entirely to do with people thinking you can get sick from being in the cold when that's not true at all

This is true because being out in the cold doesn't directly give you a virus or bacteria, but back in the day it was a widely held assumption that if you stay out in the cold for too long you would get sick.

My understanding is that being cold weakens the immune system.

no

the viruses that gives you a cold (cold is just a blanket term for many different things fyi) just tends to travel easier in cold non-humid environments.

because the viruses are more often in like, tiny air droplets, the cold weather tends to make those linger around instead of evaporating them. that's why it's more common to get a cold in winter or when it rains a lot.

Also, people tend to stay inside more leading to people being together and spreading disease.

And you do feel cold when you have a cold because your body is trying to raise its temperature above its normal range. Your comfortable temperature becomes higher and now you feel cold and shiver in order to get there.
