No...

The NFL has declined far more than other things, (1/8th of every consumer in two years) and is mostly on Local channels.

The first one I could see. The second just seems too coincidental with timing. There really wasn't anything new or major on it that year. Now it's possible that was a large part of a combination of disdain and either people disrespecting the country or Manning leaving was the straw that broke the camels back for a ton of people.

At the current rate a few years actually..
But there's no way that NFL will lose 13% a year continually. So that will tail off severely next year or year after. It's a lot harder to lose die hard than fringe...

If I were to place an estimate on where the NFL ends up. I'd say they will consistently lose 3-5 percent a year after the initial falling off a cliff is done (which again, can't last more than another year) add a percentage or two if the Anti American bullshit is allowed to continue further. So anywhere from 3-6% a year. And there will be probably an 8 or 9% year when Rodgers retires as well. But that will be a one time outlier.

1. Superstar QBs (Manning most prominently) retiring and making for boring games
2. Oversaturation (Sunday isn't really all that special anymore)
3. Almost every NFL player being an unlikable scumbag
4. The Pats still winning despite 15 seasons of cheating, showing that the system is broken
5. Politics ruining sports as a way to escape

Those are the answers in all likely order

It does. It's just like the NBA with Jordan in 99 trying to blame the lock out and every other reason.

Especially in the case of the NFL. The NBA at least had Ewing and Barkley who were comparable to being known like Jordan. (Though not in the same stratosphere) And a bevy of upcoming super talented stars on the horizon. The NFL has none of that.

The next most recognizable after Peyton was Rodgers, who mind you, was leagues behind him AND rubs some people the wrong way (I don't know why, but he does) and then a huge way down from Rodgers is his brother from osmosis, and then someone everyone hates. Losing the face of your league is crippling. And there are no young talented superstars like NBA 99 to look forward too.

When Brees, Rodgers, Eli, Big Ben and Brady* all retire in the next few years who is the face of the league? Russel Wilson...?

If Wilson is the face of the league you are already dead. But there aren't any ultra talented young kids with charmisma and personality to take over.

Redzone

So, uh... that's not even close to it...

If 100% of the people watching football turned on Redzone instead, the NFL wouldn't come out and say we lost 100% of our viewers (CBS and Fox would, and they'd lose buckets of money on the next television agreement obviously) because they take that as a part of their viewing block.

A combination of factors.

#1: The fact that TV ratings in general are declining as people turn to other mediums to watch what they watch. Including mobile devices. Cord cutting is having a bigger effect than most people realize. Yeah, local channels are technically free. But you need an antenna to get them.

#2. Overexposure. They now have Thursday Night Football, Sunday game at noon, Sunday game at 4:00, and Sunday Night game, as well as Monday Night game (not to mention two monday night games in week 1, and the multiple London games that put Football on in the morning.)

#3: Decline in Parity. Same teams win every year, and people lose interest.

#4. Football just isn't the same game. Sometimes they don't just let the players play. This also plays into #3. A great QB is good for more wins than it should be.

#5. Some teams are just perennial losers. Fans get fed up with constantly losing. They find better things to do on sunday than watch their team get blown out: Like Golf, or Fishing, or watching paint dry.

The elite QBs the NFL put so much stock into to the point on changing rules are all 35 plus except Rodgers who is like 33. This current eras in their prime QBs are guys like ryan, flacco, newton, dalton, wilson, taylor, luck (he's 27 or 28 now if I recall....not some fresh outta college dude anymore), stafford, etc
Not terrible, but not manning Brady Ben rivers Rodgers or the Stat padder

Also TV is declining as a whole, and with such prominent streaming services that offer 1080 on GameDay for no cost....ya declinING was going to happen.

Perhaps the most under talked about thing though is youth involvement in football is declining by a similar amount each year. I'm assuming due to cte. That could be a part of it too

Pats winning with controversy
Lol browns
Steelers Ravens rivalry but the Steelers can never beat the Pats
Redskins name issue
Rodgers love
Chargers start 2-5 and have to play catch up to have a playoff shot but fall short around week 15
NFC east so stacked according to the media, they never win a playoff game outside of two giants SB runs
Etc

The more I think about it, the more i realize the Pats are to blame. Watching the NFL now is like voting in an election that you know is rigged--you used to have some hope in the beginning that there would eventually be justice, but now what's the point in even bothering?

Plus their last two rings coming out of complete fluke games just killed the passion for some people.

I dont think younger audiences care to sit around watching TV the way we do. And the league has too many crappy teams and if you dont have a top ten QB youre kinda screwed. Peyton retiring had an impact too. That these guys cant stay on the field is a big deal.

It's not though. You don't need cable to watch most games. And those who have cut the cord and now do not watch football probably didn't watch it in the first place (or if they did, stopped watching for one of the reasons listed above). No one is saying "well, guess I don't like football anymore before I canceled my cable service."

Kneeling has had no impact. Ratings tracking would actually indicate that said drama has given a small bolster in flagging ratings. The simple tracking suggests that Millenials and Gen Z are tapping out of football thanks to a host of other media at their fingertips and the lack of exciting plays in football right now. Twitter trends suggest football is trending downwards in terms of discussion, usually a sign that games are not creating memorable moments that spawn the water cooler talk of the next day. Meanwhile, a new form of event viewing is growing - binge-watching or non-appointment viewing. Simply put, Netflix is killing football.

But that's a product of not caring about football, not the cause of not caring about football. People in that position are preferring to stream things because the NFL isn't giving them enough reason to watch live TV.

Those feelings may have always existed. Not everyone who watches football ranks it their number one priority, but that didn't matter back then because your favourite shows didn't always overlap with it. Now with services like Netflix football and other sports are now competing with your favourite shows/movies.

Whoever said about your team losing is right, at least that's one of the good reasons.

LA had no team until last year so everyone thought that LA would love the Rams even if they were losing. When they started losing, fans stopped watching and paying $100 to go to a game. Why? Nobody likes to see their team lose frequently. People will watch other sports or shows or maybe do something else.

That said, LA fans are very fickle in general and are also the type to call for firings if a team loses too much.
