I'm an American and the thought never crosses my mind. The panic is generally silly and stupid because, statistically speaking, you're far more likely to be killed during a robbery than you are during a mass shooting. The odds of a death via mass shooting are next to nil (iirc, it accounts for less than 1% of all murders -- ie, the lightning of murders). The odds of being killed by a drunk driver are far higher.

And, more generally, I'm more scared of bombs than I am of mass shooters. When a mass shooter strikes, you at least have time to react (assuming you're not the first target). Bombs kill without warning.
