The poison mushrooms are easy enough to avoid that, logically, if the player touches one it's because THEY didn't think they were poisonous. In-canon, Mario is only aware the mushrooms are poisonous if the player demonstrates they are also aware.

fun fact though the mushrooms that make him grow are based on a real mushroom that can be fatal if enough is ingested, but the feeling after eating them has been described as feeling like you are growing bigger.

well at least I saw that somewhere on the internet but can't trust everything it says.
