What I dont get is the whales have shown time and time again that they will spend money on anything whether it is cosmetic or not. So basically there is no need to bring in pay to win if you arent trying to alienate your fan base

Companies aren't content with merely making money - they want _all_ of the money. It's why we saw so many companies attempting to ape CoD last gen, because CoD was making piles of money. They ape whatever is popular, and right now, Overwatch's fuckery is what's king. It's what drove Visceral's game to the ground. It's what's driving BFII. It's what's driving Destiny 2. It's what's going to happen with Bioware's new Destiny clone.

Also, as someone who played way more of destiny 2 than I should have, the microtransactions are still only cosmetic in that game, it hasn't affected the game itself yet. Not defending it, just clarifying. Oddly enough, cod ww2 is basically identical to destiny 2 in form and function, minus the co op of d2, and it actualk has non cosmetic stuff in it's loot boxes.

Overwatch is still the progenitor of all this madness though.

I don't know about that, I was seeing loot/gamble boxes in some games long before Overwatch came out, the term "whale" was floating around back then too.

At least Overwatch did it right, with the contents only being cosmetics. When it involves game changing stuff that affects the outcome of a match and stuff then that's when it pisses me off

The pushback against microtransactions is sadly a minority. Most of the average casual gamer doesn't care.

But they supposedly lowered the system price by $10 and then sold the cables separately for $10...

Nintendo fucks over the consumer plenty, they just do it in different ways. Like here's a shitty controller, pay more than the cost of a new game to get a real controller. Here's Amiibos, basically DLC except with physical scarcity too, so they just made nickel and dime DLC worse, and their response to LPs.

Really everywhere you look in gaming sucks for one reason or another.

People say AAA gaming is creatively bankrupt, but it's not like the indie scene is much better. It's the new source of shovelware and so many games, even successful ones, are so unbelievably by the numbers, and many others are just apeing what old games did and coasting off nostalgia. Sure there's stand out games that are really good and impressive, and there's exceptions from big publishers too.

Still, if the big names in gaming are going to go this route more and more, indie games will probably be where people will be turning in greater numbers for just actual games without the BS. Indie gaming is drowning in nostalgia goggles, but there are lessons often forgotten from the older times in gaming that were worth remembering, like video games should unapologetically be video games and not weighed down by a bunch of bullshit.

Them and sort of like, medium developers might be the future for awhile. Like From Software as they're pretty old-fashioned and set in their ways, so developers like them are probably pretty immune to these horrible newer trends in gaming.

Except they took sliders and other shit that were free in the first Destiny, and locked them behind the loot box mechanic in Destiny 2. I have no problem with cosmetics in the game, or even payable cosmetics. What I find bothersome is how you have to enter in to a gambling system to get these things. It feeds off of the same mental triggers as real gambling does. It's a glorified gacha system. Have them as rewards - random rewards from quests. Sell them to us directly. But don't reach into my pockets to grab at my wallet, only to accidentally grab my colon and pull it out instead.
