A North Korean soldier has defected to South Korea at the heavily protected Demilitarised Zone (DMZ), South Korea's military says.

The soldier was shot and injured by his own military as he crossed to the South Korean side of the Joint Security Area in the village of Panmunjom.

The defector has been taken to hospital.

This is the fourth defection by a North Korean soldier via the DMZ - one of the world's most heavily guarded strips of land - in the last three years.

According to a statement from South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff, the soldier made it across by passing through the Joint Security Area (JSA) at Panmunjom, which is the only portion of the Demilitarised Zone where both forces stand face-to-face.

"He crossed from a North Korea post towards our Freedom House [a building on the South Korean side of the border]," the statement said. He was hit in the arm and shoulder.

Wow, what an amazing story. In a desperate attempt for freedom, he jumped over the wall and ran across the DMZ to South Korea. The North Korean soldiers he had been just serving with opened fire on him, and he was shot twice but managed to get across alive.

This just goes to show how desperate the people of North Korea are for freedom and how tightly the regime has gripped them.

Gotta wonder what it'd be like being one of the soldiers shooting at their former bro. I wonder if some of them intentionally missed.

I live in a big house and it's handy to have a pair of running shoes so that it doesn't take me forever to get from one area of the house to another.

I remember visiting the DMZ. Such a weird, creepy vibe in that place. All the soldiers are constantly on edge while tourists are walking around being curious.

What if...NK are intentionally letting some of their soldiers escape when they're actually meant as spies to infiltrate into South Korea?

Do you think they're letting North Korean defectors into senior positions at the NSA?

I don't have to imagine, they're probably already dead. If not, they definitely will be soon.

I wouldn't be surprised if the shooter (and his) family get the worst treatment too for failing to stop the defector.

Apparently there were four North Korean soldiers who opened fire, and they fired about 40 rounds total. He was hit 5 times.

Good guys. If he was shot 5 times and was still able to cross what was probably a field full of mine, that was definitely on purpose

The place where he ran across didn't have any mines, but a lot of troops.

In another update the defector was found to have some massive parasitic worm in his stomach

http://www.newsweek.com/north-korean-defector-had-10-inch-parasite-his-stomach-unlike-anything-surgeon-713147

It is likely from the contaminated food in North Korea. Apparently the surgeons had never seen anything like it before. This is yet another sign of how fucked up it is on the other side of the DMZ. I wonder how prevalent this is.

It might not be random, this could be rampant in NK given the food conditions.
