kickstarter update

And our documentary is up and running, with much going on! Most of our work for the next several months involves digging into the archival media with a fine tooth comb, tracking what we have and digging for the shiniest pieces of gold. I won't start the bulk of the interview process for some time, however I can divulge that we did film an absolutely incredible interview with a stellar lady who excels at many instruments, some of the xylophonic variety, and this extraordinary soul just might have allowed us to film her playing a particularly difficult piece of FZ's music.

oh that kickstarter documentary is still being made? i thought it was frank zappa in his own words, but i guess that's a different documentary.

i'd guess that lady is ruth, but does she "excel at many instruments"? as far as i know she only plays percussion and piano/keyboards. though if you count all the percussion instruments as separate instruments that does work, i guess.

RIP Cecil Taylor.

Influential avant-garde jazz and free jazz pianist who appears on the Freak Out! list of Frank's influences. Also, Frank stated that if you want to learn how to play the piano, you should "get a record by Cecil Taylor" (source: http://wiki.killuglyradio.com/index.php/My_Favorite_Records ). Frank's piano solo on the studio version of "It Can't Happen Here" sounds a lot like Taylor's solos.

I should have mentioned when Walter Becker passed away last year too, while I'm at it. I've mentioned before how I consider Steely Dan to be one of the very few bands that reminds me of Zappa in several ways, and at one point Frank mentioned that they were one of his favorite bands. Don't remember in which interview and I'm not going to spend hours on ZWJ looking for it (assuming they even have it), so just take my word for it >.>

huh, i just now found out that zappa plays zappa played with dream theater on a four band tour.

the other two bands were scale the summit and bigelf. i'm not familiar with them but according to wikipedia they play prog metal as well, so i'd probably like them!

Overdue Zappa News: A new vinyl only album was released on 4/21 in honor of Record Store Day: Lumpy Gravy: Primordial. Here's the report on the official site on it:

Coming on 4/21/18 for Record Store Day! Lumpy Gravy: Primordial contains Frank Zappas first orchestral-only edit of the music sessions recorded at Capitol Studios during 1967.

This self-described ballet was never officially issued until 2008 on the posthumous collection Lumpy Money. On Record Store Day 2018 it makes its debut on limited edition 12 45rpm mono translucent burgundy colored vinyl, mastered from the original 1967 1/4 mono master tape, with FZs original gatefold album design lovingly restored.

Pick up your copy at a record store near you on April 21!

Contrary to this news report, this version is actually slightly different from the Lumpy Money Project/Object version (for instance, this version starts with the "King Kong" theme while the LMPO version does not). So I guess this counts as a legitimately new album. Capitol Records already released this version without Frank's permission way back in August of 1967, but this would be the first official version of this album.

Aww yeah the 50th anniversary vinyl only special edition of Absolutely Free GET. I bought it at the Concierto in Amsterdam - the same music store I went to with Muffin when he came to visit Amsterdam. I may do some Songs of the Day to talk about Frank's writings on several of the songs in the "libretto" that comes with the album.

A disappointing aspect is that the LP with bonus material contains mono versions of "Big Leg Emma" and "Why Don'tcha Do Me Right?" I'm all for exclusive new versions, but I'm in no hurry to listen to familiar tracks in worse sound quality than I'm used to >_>
